• Sam Sharpe Square - In 1976, Charles Square in Montego Bay was renamed Sam Sharpe Square in honor of national hero Sam Sharpe, who hailed from Montego Bay. Sharpe was executed in the Montego Bay marketplace on May 23, 1832, for his involvement in the 1831-32 Emancipation War. The Square features several heritage structures, including the Sam Sharpe monument, the cage, the civic center, and the Freedom Monument and fountain. The Sam Sharpe monument, designed by Kay Sullivan, depicts Sharpe holding his Bible and addressing his people. The five statues were cast in bronze in Jamaica. Sam Sharpe Square is the heart of Montego Bay, also known as Parade, and includes banks, shopping areas, and dining establishments. At the end of the year, during Christmas, a tree is placed in the Square, adorned with lights and other festive entertainment.
