From the fifth to the eighth century, Mont Saint-Michel was part of Neustria and remained unconquered during the Hundred Years’ War. King Louis XI later converted it into a prison. According to legend, in 708, the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, instructing him to build a church on the rocky island.
Saint Malo
Saint-Malo - Known as the home of corsairs, French privateers, and sometimes pirates, Saint-Malo was where Breton explorer Jacques Cartier lived, who is credited with discovering Canada. The first colonists from Saint-Malo established a settlement on the Falkland Islands, which led to the French name “Îles Malouines,” eventually giving rise to the Spanish name “Islas Malvinas.”
Cathedrale de Saint-Malo - Dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa, this church was constructed during the episcopacy of Jean de Châtillon (1146-1163) on the site of an ancient church founded in the 7th century.
