- Cattedrale di Monreale - Visitors will be dropped off by their driver in Piazza Guglielmo II, where they can explore the stunning Monreale Cathedral. This cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is regarded as one of the most significant medieval churches globally. The cathedral’s mosaics are truly unique and exquisite, covering an area of over 6,000 square meters with more than 130 Byzantine mosaics adorning the church. For a fee, visitors can access various areas of the cathedral, including the terraces.
Adjacent to the cathedral is the San Benedetto Monastery. The monastery’s cloister features a Romanesque square layout, with over 90 columns adorned with mosaics and Romanesque capitals. At the center of the cloister is a garden with a palm-shaped fountain from which water flows from the leaves.
Nearby, the Diocesan Museum offers an intriguing collection of paintings, sacred vestments, and liturgical objects, along with a beautiful series of 1700s frescoes. From Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, visitors can view the Duomo and leisurely admire the garden with the renowned marble fountain, Fontana del Tritone.
Another must-see is the Belvedere, located a short distance from the Palazzo del Municipio. From the Belvedere, visitors can gaze over the Conca d’Oro and be captivated by the Palermo hills.
- Villa Palagonia - Known as the Villa of the Monsters of Bagheria, Villa Palagonia is a significant Sicilian monument. The entrance avenue, crowned by a triumphal arch, is lined with numerous statues of monsters and animals, originally numbering two hundred, with sixty-two remaining today. These statues are a major attraction of the villa.
Legends suggest that the statues had a malevolent influence on people, yet this did not lessen the villa’s allure and charm for writers like Goethe, directors, and artists such as Salvador Dalì, who expressed a desire to purchase Villa Palagonia for holidays in Sicily. Renato Guttuso, born in Bagheria, referred to it as “the place of my childhood games” and created three artworks dedicated to the villa.
Villa Palagonia also served as a filming location for scenes in the movie Il Mafioso by Alberto Lattuada with Alberto Sordi (1962), The Wedding Director by Marco Bellocchio with Sergio Castellitto (2006), and Baarìa by Giuseppe Tornatore (2009). The entrance fee to the villa is 5 euros, and visiting hours are from Monday to Sunday, 9 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 7 PM.
- Cefalù - Cefalù is a charming medieval village, renowned as one of the most beautiful and well-preserved in Italy. Visitors should not miss a stroll through the narrow streets, ancient houses, shops, restaurants, and ice cream parlors. Midway along Via Vittorio Emanuele is the medieval washhouse, accessible via a staircase made of lava stone. The waters flowing in the washhouse are from the Cefalino River.
Continuing past the washhouse, visitors will reach Porta Pescara, an opening offering a view of the sea. Shortly after Porta della Pescara, on the left, is Piazza Marina with the pier of the old port. From the old port, visitors can see the most enchanting part of Cefalù: the houses with balconies directly over the sea.
A few meters further, visitors will find themselves in the town hall square, in front of which stands the Cathedral of Cefalù. Besides the medieval village, Cefalù boasts one of Sicily’s most beautiful beaches, featuring white sand and crystal-clear waters.
