• Basilika St. Michael - Nestled in the scenic landscape between Mondsee and Irrsee lakes, the town of Mondsee is home to the renowned St. Michael’s Wedding Basilica. This basilica gained fame as the wedding venue for Maria and Captain von Trapp in the globally acclaimed musical, The Sound of Music. Since then, it has hosted over 400 weddings. Dating back to the 12th century, the basilica is a symbol of Mondsee and ranks among Austria’s largest Gothic churches. It received its lavish decoration between the 17th and 18th centuries. The site’s history extends further back, originally housing the Mondsee monastery, established in 748. After 800, the “Mondsee Matthew,” the oldest German Bible translation, was penned here. Following the monastery’s dissolution in 1791, the building was transformed into a castle and now serves as a hotel. The lake is noted as one of the warmest in the Salzkammergut region.
