• Mondsee - Nestled between the picturesque lakes of Mondsee and Irrsee, the town of Mondsee is renowned for St. Michael’s Wedding Basilica. This iconic basilica gained fame as the wedding venue for Maria and Captain von Trapp in the globally acclaimed musical, “The Sound of Music.” Since then, it has hosted over 400 weddings. The basilica, dating back to the 12th century, stands as a symbol of Mondsee and is among the largest Gothic churches in Austria. Its lavish decoration was added at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, though its history stretches back further. Originally, the site was home to the Mondsee monastery, established in 748. After 800, the “Mondsee Matthew,” the oldest German translation of the Bible, was penned here. Following the monastery’s dissolution in 1791, the building was transformed into a castle and now serves as a hotel. The lake is known as one of the warmest in the Salzkammergut region.
• St Gilgen - The historic town of St. Gilgen is beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Wolfgang, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. This spa town boasts several notable buildings, including the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s mother, now a museum. The Zwölferhorn mountain, overlooking the town, is accessible by cable car. Ascend to 1,522 meters above sea level to enjoy panoramic views of St. Gilgen, Lake Wolfgang, and the surrounding lake district, extending to Upper Austria and the Dachstein mountains near Hallstatt.
• Hallstatt - Hallstatt is a delightful town located on the shores of a scenic lake, home to the world’s oldest salt mines. Its unique setting in the Salzkammergut makes it a top tourist attraction. Hallstatt’s charm is so admired in China that an exact replica of the town was constructed there. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hallstatt offers a variety of activities. Visitors can sail on the lake, stroll through streets lined with wooden houses on stilts, explore the ice cave, slide down the salt slide, or hike while enjoying views of the mountain peaks. The archaeological discoveries in Hallstatt are so significant that they have named a period of the “Hallstatt culture.” These can be viewed in the local museum. Just above Hallstatt, visitors can explore the world’s oldest salt mine and capture stunning photos from the skywalk.
