From Sea Turtles to Caves: My Unplanned Miyako Island Adventure
When the sea conditions changed my plans, I found myself on a thrilling snorkeling and caving adventure on Miyako Island. Join me as I swim with sea turtles and explore the mystical Pumpkin Limestone Cave.
A Serendipitous Start
As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s call, and Miyako Island’s snorkeling and caving adventure seemed like the perfect way to indulge my love for the sea. I had initially planned to explore the Pumpkin Cave and Sea Cave Snorkeling, but the unpredictable sea conditions had other plans for me. Instead, I found myself on a tour that promised encounters with sea turtles and a visit to the mystical Pumpkin Limestone Cave.
The day began with a gathering at the Adventure Pipi Pumpkin Cave Parking Lot, where I met my guides, Yamato and Hiro, along with fellow adventurers. The camaraderie was instant, and despite the change in plans, the excitement was palpable. We piled into rental cars, a decision that proved wise as it allowed us the freedom to explore nearby cafes and sights during our free time.
Snorkeling with Sea Turtles
The snorkeling session was nothing short of magical. As someone who has spent countless hours riding waves, the chance to swim alongside sea turtles was a dream come true. The emerald-blue waters of Miyako Island were teeming with vibrant coral reefs and a kaleidoscope of colorful fish. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
Our guides, Ricky and Mio, were attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring that even the most inexperienced snorkelers felt at ease. The highlight, of course, was capturing photos with the sea turtles, a rare and unforgettable experience. The guides used a waterproof camera to document our underwater adventure, and the free photo data gift was a delightful bonus.
Exploring the Pumpkin Limestone Cave
After a leisurely lunch break, we reconvened for the caving portion of the tour. Accessing the Pumpkin Limestone Cave required a short canoe ride, adding an extra layer of adventure to the day. The cave, known locally as “Ryugu-jo” or Dragon Palace, was a sight to behold. Its pumpkin-shaped limestone formations were both eerie and enchanting.
Climbing and descending through the cave was a full-body experience, and the jumping spot at the end was an exhilarating finale. While the cave is a popular tourist spot, it felt like a sacred place of nature, deserving of respect and preservation. The tour concluded with a canoe ride back, leaving us with a sense of awe and gratitude for the natural wonders we had witnessed.
In the end, the change in plans turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Miyako Island Adventure offered a perfect blend of thrill and tranquility, and I left with memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you’re a seasoned ocean lover or a first-time snorkeler, this adventure is a must-do on Miyako Island.
