Malaysia’s First Oil Well
The Grand Old Lady is situated on Canada Hill and symbolizes Miri’s rich petroleum history, which spans nearly a century. This site is a key attraction in Miri. Although it no longer produces crude oil, it has been designated a protected historical site by the Sarawak Government. Visitors can enjoy a stunning view of Miri City from the observatory platform. Adjacent to this oil well is the newly established Petroleum Science Museum. Remarkably, the oil well was one of the few structures that survived the bombings, fires, and other attacks during World War II.

Petroleum Museum - The Petroleum Museum features a variety of exhibits that detail the history of the petroleum industry in Sarawak. Completed in 2005, the museum boasts a modern design and is partially funded by Petronas, Malaysia’s leading oil company, resembling the Petrosains Museum in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. It offers a panoramic view of Miri, including offshore oil rigs and supply vessels. This museum is particularly fascinating for geology students or anyone interested in the history of oil exploration in Sarawak. Admission is free, making it a must-visit for tourists, especially since there are limited attractions in Miri.
-
Miri Handicraft Centre - The Miri Handicraft Centre is a treasure trove of unique, handmade crafts, T-shirts, beadwork, and more. It’s a must-visit for a quick shopping spree for native handicrafts before heading home. The centre features numerous stalls, offering a wide array of vibrant and uniquely crafted items. These stalls are individually operated, and visitors can often watch locals, mostly elders, crafting their products live. In addition to crafts and beadwork, the centre sells Penan mats, blowpipes, and more. Wooden bracelets and necklaces are also available. The building housing the handicraft centre has historical significance, as it previously served as Miri’s Community Hall.
-
Tua Pek Kong Temple - The Tua Pek Kong Temple is dedicated to the deity most cherished by overseas Chinese. According to local legend, construction began in 1913 to express gratitude to the deity for ending a mysterious epidemic. The temple is located next to the Miri Fish Market, where the local catch is brought in early each morning. A vast selection of fresh fish and seafood is available here.
-
Tamu Muhibbah - Tamu Khas is the native market, featuring a variety of stalls selling tropical fruits and vegetables. Popular items include Ikan Terubok Masin, Bario Rice, and salt.
-
Miri District - The final stop is at Miri City Hall’s rooftop for a sunset view. Located in Marina Parkcity, it overlooks the South China Sea. Its architectural design resembles an oil barrel, symbolizing Miri’s heritage as an oil-producing city. The rooftop on the 10th floor is open to visitors daily from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, though it may close for special events or inclement weather.
