Covering over 8,800 hectares, the park is centered around the historic Minneriya Tank, an ancient irrigation reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. This vital water source supports the park’s diverse ecosystem during the extended dry season.
  The park is best known for the Great Elephant Gathering, occurring annually from July to September. During this time, hundreds of wild Asian elephants migrate from nearby forests to the tank, creating one of the largest wild elephant gatherings globally. Visitors have the opportunity to observe these magnificent animals up close.

Minneriya National Park, located on the Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway in Sri Lanka, 50150, is dedicated to promoting responsible tourism by providing memorable safaris in Hurulu Eco Park, Minneriya, and Kaudulla National Park. This park is renowned for the spectacular gatherings of elephants. Visitors have the chance to witness large groups of elephants gathering around Minneriya Lake to feed and bathe. Additionally, the park offers safari experiences, opportunities to observe diverse wildlife and birds, and the chance to enjoy stunning landscapes.

Tickets can be purchased upon entering the park, and the operator is available to assist with this. The safari experience lasts between 3 to 4 hours, and photography is encouraged throughout the journey.
