Great experience - Smaller boat could get very close to waterfalls where you could get water spayed on your face. We saw a group of dolphins who swam with us for a while and got so close to the boat that it felt like I could touch them ivy reaching out.

Small group on a small... - Small group on a small boat. Could get very close to the shore and wild life. Captain was very knowledgeable and gave an excellent commentary.

Mitre Peak Cruises – Milford Sound - We did the Milford Sound cruise with Mitre Peak Cruises, and overall, it was a great experience. The scenery is undeniably stunning – dramatic cliffs, towering peaks, and still, reflective waters. Our guide was fantastic: knowledgeable, passionate, and provided lots of valuable insights about the landscape, wildlife, and history of the area, which really enhanced the journey. We were lucky with calm weather, but due to limited recent rainfall, we only saw two waterfalls. Still beautiful, just not as dramatic as during wetter times. One major plus was the smaller boat size and smaller group, which made the cruise feel more personal and peaceful. It was a much better atmosphere compared to the larger, more crowded tour boats we saw out there. That said, while I truly enjoyed the experience, I didn’t find it quite as jaw-dropping as the hype had led me to believe – perhaps expectations were a little too high. Still, if you’re going to do a cruise at Milford Sound, I’d definitely recommend Mitre Peak Cruises for a more intimate, informative, and relaxed way to see this iconic natural wonder.

Cruise on Mikford Sound was definitely worth it. - The cruise was convenient, well planned, and we appreciated the cup of tea. The narration was interesting. My overseas visitors enjoyed the day very much.

Set your expectations correctly and enjoy. It’s beautiful. - We booked the 2 hr boat ride through Milford sound and had a nice time. We booked this company because it was a smaller boat in which we thought meant less people. It absolutely had less people but the ratio of number of people to the boat was still not great. Everyone wants to sit on the deck to have a more 360 view and it created a tight space there. Plenty of space inside and was warmer in there with nice seats. The issue was that the windows get dirty and it makes it harder to see and forget about taking pictures because a picture through that window will not work well. We were lucky and snagged seats on the top deck as we were some of the first to board. Getting there earlier did not mean you board sooner. It was a free for all when it came down to it. After check in, you eat on the dock and then despite a line forming, no one enforced a line and no one wanted to utilize one. The fjordland area is so unique and pretty and this is the ideal way to see it. Especially with all of the bugs here. We went at the earliest time slot and I would absolutely recommend. The area is less congested. There were less cars on the road to get there which was great with how narrow and winding the roads were. The water was calmer. You could see the mountains reflection in the water. There were also less boats in the water that early. We were able to see dolphins and seals during this time too! The parking was better early as well. We parked in the free parking lot that is further away. Its first come first serve and we arrived about 30 minutes before check in opened and there were still spots available. The walk from there to the check in desk was maybe 15-20 minutes at a fast pace but it was a nice walk on a trail so it wasn’t bad at all. Check in was super easy. Bring your lunch to eat after! There’s not much around this area for a while.

Beautiful setting; disappointing tour operator and poorly designed boat - I rarely give such poor reviews, but had to this time. The scenery is absolutely stunning, and we were fortunate to visit on a perfect day with sun and beautiful blue skies. Milford sound did not disappoint, but this tour was definitely for the masses, and was a complete let down. I kind of expected that to some extent, but I didn't expect it to be as bad as it was. The disappointment really started as soon as we arrived to the terminal. We checked in at the terminal and made our way to the dock. There was already a huge line of people, and we waited patiently. The boarding time came and went, and finally a staff member came down the dock to start boarding. However, we could not hear her instructions and didn't rudely force ourselves to the front like everyone else. When we gradually made our way to the front, we confirmed she was boarding our boat (they board multiple boats from one dock and use different colored cards). By the time we were onboard, everyone had claimed the few coveted outdoor seats, and that's when I realized how poorly designed the boat was. There was a fairly roomy interior area, but limited outdoor seating, and extremely limited outdoor space to go stand unless you immediately claimed a spot upon boarding. The boat was seemingly smaller than most other sightseeing boats in Milford, which I can see has some appeal, but this boat was far too crowded. Simply too many people to comfortably accommodate everyone. Had the weather been poor, there would have been more people inside on the boat (and honestly I wonder how they would have all fit ). But with the good weather, people naturally gravitated to the outdoor areas and simply didn't share the space with others. I think there were only two staff members onboard - not a huge deal, but just don't expect any sort of customer service or ability to ask questions. I know this seems extremely negative, and it was with this tour operator. I've been on very similar fjord cruises in Norway, and those were a completely different experience with boat layout, staffing, etc. It was tough to pick a tour operator for Milford , but they largely seemed similar (I think I picked this one because it described their route as slightly longer than other tours - and I figured if we were going all that way, we'd do a longer cruise) until I was actually standing on the dock, seeing the crowds, and comparing the different sightseeing boats. Realizing there are other more exclusive ways to experience Milford Sound, and that this type of tour is for the masses, I'd recommend looking more closely at the boats themselves before deciding which tour to take.
