- Fiordland National Park - Located in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, Fiordland National Park is renowned for the glacier-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford Sounds. A beech forest trail along the sandy Milford shore offers stunning views of the majestic Mitre Peak. Nearby, the rugged Earl Mountains are beautifully reflected in the serene waters of Mirror Lakes. The Chasm Walk on the Cleddau River features bridges with breathtaking views of powerful waterfalls.
- Milford Sound - Situated in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, Milford Sound is a fiord famous for the towering Mitre Peak, lush rainforests, and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen Falls cascading down its steep cliffs. The fiord is home to colonies of fur seals, penguins, and dolphins.
- Mitre Peak - Mitre Peak is a strikingly dramatic mountain located on the shore of Milford Sound in New Zealand’s South Island. It is one of the most photographed peaks in the country.
- Bowen Falls - The magnificent Lady Bowen Falls is Milford’s tallest waterfall, plunging 162 meters from a hanging valley into the head of Milford Sound. It supplies electricity to the Milford Sound township through a small hydroelectric scheme and serves as the settlement’s water source.
- Sinbad Gully - Tucked behind the renowned Mitre Peak, Sinbad Gully is distinguished by its steep, glacially carved walls and near-vertical granite cliffs. These natural barriers have slowed pest invasion, allowing unique native species to thrive in the gully.
Southern Discoveries is dedicated to preserving the beauty of Milford Sound for future generations, which is why it is a key partner in the Sinbad Sanctuary Project, a major conservation initiative.
The goal is to transform the valley of New Zealand’s most photographed mountain (Sinbad Gully at the base of Mitre Peak) into a sanctuary for native species.
- Stirling Falls - Stirling Falls, Milford’s second-highest waterfall, stands at an impressive 151 meters – three times the height of Niagara Falls, though the 1,300-meter mountain behind it diminishes this remarkable height. This famous waterfall was featured in the movie Wolverine, where Hugh Jackman appeared to jump off it. The sheer drop of Stirling Falls allows boats and adventurous kayakers to venture right underneath, offering an exhilarating experience as 151 meters of glacial water cascades over you.
