Departure from Bucharest
Mila 23 - The journey begins in Bucharest, where the guide will meet you to facilitate your transfer to Tulcea. This is the location where the Danube River divides into three narrow channels (Sulina, Chilia, and Sfântu Gheorghe) before flowing into the Black Sea. Often referred to as Europe’s Amazon River, the Danube River serves as a natural boundary between Romania and Bulgaria. The Danube Delta is a distinctive biosphere reserve, home to rare plant and bird species, making it an ideal destination to experience untouched nature. Its significance has earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
The next stop is Mila 23, a traditional fishing village nestled in the heart of the Danube Delta. Established by the Lipovans, a group of Russian refugees, the village harmonizes beautifully with its natural surroundings. Some parts of the Delta are accessible only by rowing boats or kayaks, with narrow channels flanked by towering trees and lush vegetation creating a barrier between civilization and pristine nature.
During the exploration of the Danube Delta, there will be ample opportunities for birdwatching, offering insights into the flora and fauna of this extraordinary biosphere reserve, including dense reed beds and birds like red-breasted geese and Dalmatian pelicans.
Danube Delta – Sulina
Sulina - Following breakfast, a day trip is planned to one of Romania’s oldest human settlements via the Sulina Branch. The port of Sulina, first mentioned over 1,000 years ago as Selina, is the easternmost point in Romania. As you row down the Sulina Branch, you’ll encounter numerous bird species, water snakes, and fish.
In Sulina, the itinerary includes visits to the village’s key landmarks: the historic churches, the 55-foot tall lighthouse in the town center, the museum within the lighthouse, and the St. Alexander and St. Nicholas Cathedral. This significant tourist attraction was constructed over 62 years, from 1910 to 1982, to commemorate Dobruja’s liberation from Turkish rule during the Romanian War of Independence.
Mila 23 - A warm, delicious lunch will be served at a local guest house on the Danube Delta’s shore, followed by a bus trip to the nearby beach.
Here, you will have a few hours to swim in the Black Sea, explore the local wildlife, or enjoy a beach stroll. Upon request, a peaceful walk through the picturesque Sulina cemetery is available, after which you can rejoin the group on the beach.
The day concludes with a boat ride back to the local guesthouse for an overnight stay.
Day trip to the Letea Village and Forest
Mila 23 - The day begins with a boat trip to Letea Village, a charming village featuring numerous traditional houses constructed from wood and clay, with thatched roofs painted in vibrant blues and greens. From there, an off-road tour of the nearby Letea Forest, Europe’s northernmost subtropical forest, is planned. This unique forest, the only oak forest on salty sand globally, boasts lianas and a subtropical flora not found elsewhere in Romania, along with diverse wildlife, including wild horses.
Upon returning from Letea Forest, a brief walking tour through the village offers the chance to see and photograph the traditional houses, engage with locals, and sample fruits from local trees.
Lunch will be served back at the guest house, and the remainder of the day is free for activities such as fishing, walking, or relaxing at the guest house. In the evening, local fishermen will host an outdoor cooking session using traditional methods employed by the area’s earliest inhabitants.
At dusk, enjoy watching the sunset through the willows of the Danube Delta before returning to the guest house to conclude the day.
