The tour spans over 42 miles, featuring more than 27 audio stories, and takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete.
- Miccosukee Indian Village - Coming up soon is an opportunity to visit the Miccosukee Indian Village. Operated by members of the Miccosukee tribe, this village offers Native arts and crafts and includes a museum showcasing their history. The tribe has a rich history in southern Florida. During the Indian Wars in the 1800s, 100 members fled into the Everglades to avoid capture.
- Nature Trail Tree Snail - Approaching soon is a short trail with a unique attraction. The Tree Snail Hammock Trail is a quarter-mile loop through a hardwood forest, taking only five minutes to complete if you just want to stretch your legs. However, most visitors choose to linger longer, as it’s an excellent spot to observe the elusive tree snail.
- H.P. Williams Roadside Park - Just ahead is H.P. Williams Roadside Park. If you’re eager to see wildlife, this is the place for you. A boardwalk runs along a waterway popular with alligators, turtles, and occasionally snakes. It’s also a fantastic location to observe herons and egrets wading in the water, as well as hawks perched in the trees above.
- Loop Road - Continue straight. You’re traveling along what is known as Loop Road. While it may be easy to drive, it was certainly not easy to construct. In 1915, Miami businessman James Jaudon had a vision. He imagined a highway cutting across the South Florida swamp, facilitating easy transport of goods.
- County Road 94 - How did this area become a national preserve? It all began with plans to build an airport. When the Everglades became a national park in the 1940s, the federal government couldn’t purchase this land from private owners, leaving it vulnerable to development. In the 1960s, the government proposed building the Big Cypress Jetport here, which would have been the world’s largest airport at the time.
- Gator Hook Trail - Up ahead is Gator Hook Trail, offering a unique experience. This moderately challenging, 5-mile round trip hike starts on dry land but soon leads hikers into ankle-deep water, eventually reaching knee-deep or, for shorter travelers, hip-deep water!
- Kirby Storter Roadside Park - Approaching soon is Kirby Storter Roadside Park, one of Big Cypress’s most iconic attractions. The main feature of this park is the mile-long boardwalk winding through lush hardwood and cypress trees. The trail is strikingly green and pleasantly shaded. For those who want to be surrounded by some of the most stunning natural scenery Big Cypress Swamp has to offer, this is a must-see trail.
- Big Cypress National Preserve - Welcome to the tour of Big Cypress National Preserve! The tour begins at 29701 Southwest 8th Street in Miami. Buffalo Tiger’s boat shop should be visible on your right. If you’re not already there, head there now.
Note: This 48-mile-long tour covers the essentials of Big Cypress in 3-5 hours.
- 38000 Tamiami Trail E - Look ahead for a small white shack. That’s the Ochopee Post Office, the smallest post office in North America! If you’d like to stop in and get something postmarked, they’re usually happy to oblige. It’s a unique souvenir you won’t find anywhere else!
- Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center - Coming up shortly is the Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center, marking the end of our tour. This visitor center offers all the usual amenities, along with paintings by renowned Everglades artist Sam Vinikoff. It’s also an intriguing facility, as it was thoughtfully designed with energy conservation in mind.
- Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk - Located about ten miles from the Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center, the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk showcases some truly iconic Big Cypress scenery. This half-mile boardwalk meanders through an old-growth cypress grove, which is as lush and green as it sounds.
