Fun & Interesting South Beach Food Tour - This was our first trip to Miami and we’re so glad we took the “Donuts, Pastelitos & Patisseries: South Beach Sweets Walking Tour” with Johanna (Jo) as our guide. What we thought was going to be a simple food tour turned into a history lesson of South Beach, as well as a wonderful sugar coma! Luckily, the tour only included the two of us, so we had a lot of opportunities to ask questions. Jo patiently answered them all…about the city, specific neighborhoods, and the iconic hotels primarily located along Ocean Drive. In addition to several stops on Ocean Drive, we hopped over to Collins Avenue, where Jo shared secrets embedded in the terrazzo (tile) of some hotels. We saw the Burger King that has a bar and a little robot that delivers food. These are two things you don’t find in the Midwest, so that was cool. We stopped at Gianni Versace’s old mansion which is now a restaurant. We also saw the building where some scenes from “Scarface” were filmed. The old Cadillac sitting outside the building (along with a Tony Montana dummy) was a hoot. We got our first taste of real Cuban coffee known as Colada, which Jo showed how it’s shared. The food on the tour was divine; there were so many sweets! It took us all day to recover from the sugar overload, but it was totally worth it. These were the spots we hit: • De Lucia Buon Pane Italiano Bakery: Bombolone Donut • Las Olas Café: Guava & Cheese Pastry with Cuban Coffee (Colada) & Beef Pastelitos • Rosetta Bakery: Cannoli • Bettant Bakery: Guava & Cheese Danish Jo was an excellent tour guide and kept in communication as she was slightly delayed due to parking issues. Her personality is well suited to tours, and we had a blast. Following the tour, we spent a couple of hours wandering around, enjoying the Art Deco and beach. NOTE: The TripAdvisor listing mentions gelato and churros, but we did not sample these. We also did not end the tour at Naked Taco, but Jo recommended it as a great place to eat.

Johanna was friendly,... - Johanna was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us a great history lesson of Miami and South Beach. Since she’s been living there awhile, she told us some great facts about the area. Plus, all of the food items that were selected were excellent. All were unique. She was personable with my teenage daughter and engaging. As a plus, we got to see some of the drag show from outside at the Palace. We also went by the Versace mansion and learned about the history there. Good tour to do with friends or family.
