- Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for public buildings related to city administration, justice, business, trade activities like markets, and places of worship.
- Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter stands prominently on the north side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius providing a dramatic backdrop. When the colony was established (80 BC), the temple was extensively renovated to become a true Capitolium, featuring three cult statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, similar to those in Rome, placed on a high base for visibility to Forum visitors.
- Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side, aligned with the entrance. Niches in the side wall contain copies of two marble statues, a female and a male warrior, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely an emperor such as Titus or Vespasian, indicating the area’s dedication to the imperial cult. To the left is a room for sacred board meetings, and to the right, a large room with a masonry counter, possibly for selling fish.
- Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. In ancient times, it was bustling and lively with numerous shops, workshops (“officinae”), cafes, snack bars, and restaurants.
- Lupanar - The Lupanar is Pompeii’s most renowned official brothel, situated on a narrow side street near the city center. This unique two-story stone building was purpose-built, featuring five small rooms on the ground floor with masonry beds. It is famous for its well-preserved erotic frescoes above the doors, likely serving as a visual “menu” of services, and for the hundreds of graffiti left by visitors, offering a fascinating glimpse into the social life and language of ancient Roman plebeians.
- Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, the Baths date back to the years following the founding of the veteran colony by General Silla (80 BC). Separate entrances were provided for women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section includes an apodyterium (dressing room), also used as a tepidarium (medium temperature baths), frigidarium (cold baths), and calidarium (hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths suffered significant damage during the earthquake of 62 AD.
- Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun (Italian: Casa del Fauno), constructed in the 2nd century BC, was one of Pompeii’s largest and most impressive private residences, housing numerous great artworks. It is one of the most luxurious aristocratic homes from the Roman Republic, offering a better reflection of this period than most archaeological evidence found even in Rome.
- Teatro Grande - The Large Theater of Pompeii was constructed by the Romans on a hillside, utilizing the natural depression of the mountain to create a magnificent auditorium divided into five sectors. The stage hosted tragedies from Greco-Roman traditions.
- Basilica - The Basilica, covering 1,500 square meters, was the most opulent building in the Forum, used for business transactions and the administration of justice.
