On August 24th, 79 AD, life was peaceful on the slopes of Vesuvius. Picturesque towns were home to affluent landowners and bustling with merchants, shopkeepers, and skilled artisans. The eruption of Vesuvius preserved this scene for nearly two thousand years beneath layers of volcanic material, which later became an open-air archaeological museum, thanks to excavations that began in the eighteenth century.
Today, we revisit these historic sites, starting with the city of Pompeii, exploring its houses, streets, market, and the entire context of a civilization that has remained preserved through the ages. We will marvel at and experience firsthand what is now considered the most dangerous volcano in the world, Vesuvius.
