Ascend approximately 500 meters over lava fields, craters, lava channels, and hot fumaroles to reach 3,000 meters—the highest altitude permitted by summit regulations—at the base of the South-East Crater, Etna’s most active cone.
This tour covers the upper slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano and the second most active in the world. The path remains above 2,500 meters, offering safe, regulated summit views. From a secure distance, admire the South-East Crater, the origin of many recent eruptions; access to the cone is restricted by Zafferana and Civil Protection due to extreme heat, instability, and potential collapses when magma is near the surface.
Descent: walk from 3,000 meters to the cable car station, then take the cable car back to the starting point.
Duration: approximately 5 hours • Distance: around 6.5 km • Elevation Gain: about 500 meters (may vary) • Difficulty: E – suitable for hikers accustomed to high altitudes.

The journey begins at an elevation of 1,900 meters, where participants will check in and purchase tickets with their guide before boarding the cable car to 2,500 meters. From this point, an extraordinary hike commences, ascending approximately 500 meters in altitude. The trek traverses recent snow-covered lava flows, expansive craters, striking lava channels, and hot fumaroles emitting high-temperature gases. The climb reaches 3,000 meters—the highest altitude currently allowed, subject to volcanic risk levels ⚠️—at the base of the South-East Crater, Etna’s most active and impressive cone.
This path offers an immersive experience of Europe’s highest active volcano, providing rare, close-up views of ongoing volcanic activity and the dramatic landscape sculpted by recent eruptions. The descent is entirely on foot from 3,000 meters back to the cable car station, followed by a cable car ride to the starting point.
