The bell tower, standing 90 meters tall with a base of about 10 meters, features the world’s largest and most intricate mechanical and astronomical clock. Every day at noon, the statues animate to the tune of Schubert’s Hail Mary. The figures on the bell tower commemorate the War of the Vespers of 1282, celebrating the Sicilian victory over Charles of Anjou.
