Tikal National Park spans over 575 square kilometers of thick jungle and incorporates multitudes of ancient architectural remains.
The central hub of the former metropolis encompasses around 3,000 edifices, spreading over a landmass of nearly 16 square kilometers.
In addition, Tikal forms an integral part of the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, a vast conservation space of one million hectares that came into existence in 1990, aiming to preserve the rapidly vanishing dense forestation of Petén, endangered by escalating human settlement, unlawful woodcutting, and slash-and-burn cultivation habits.
Researchers specializing in archaeological studies have deduced that the settlement of the Maya people in the region presently referred to as Tikal dates back to around 900 BC.
