Journey from Mekele to Gheralta
Gheralta Rock - Embark on a drive from Mekele, approximately 100km, towards the impressive Gheralta mountains. Begin the trek after breakfast at the mountain’s base, taking about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the ancient church in the sky, Youhans Maqudi. After exploring this church, continue trekking for about 3 to 4 hours to arrive at the vibrantly adorned church, Abune Abraham, dating back to the 7th century AD. Descend to the base camp, which takes around 2 hours.
Gheralta - Korkor
Gheralta Rock - Following breakfast prepared by our skilled cook, continue trekking while enjoying the stunning views, wildlife, and traditional Tigray houses to reach Mariam Papasite. After visiting the church, trek back to the base camp for approximately 4 hours. Accommodation is provided through camping in the village of Korkor.
Gheralta - Mekele or Axum
Gheralta Rock - After an early breakfast, begin trekking to the highest point of Gheralta, which stands at 2700 meters above sea level, offering views of the four corners of the remarkable Gheralta mountains. Enjoy lunch atop the mountain before continuing the trek to visit the churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. After visiting these churches, proceed with a one-hour walk to Hawzien. Finally, drive back to Mekele, with the option to drive to Axum.
