By the latter half of the 17th century, plantations were set up along the Upper Commewijne and Cottica rivers, primarily cultivating sugarcane, coffee, and cocoa.
This tour begins with a drive from Paramaribo over the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge. The first stop is Peperpot, a former coffee and cocoa plantation, where participants can enjoy a walk along the Peperpot Trail. The journey then continues to the Open Air Museum in Nieuw-Amsterdam and the former sugarcane plantation Mariënburg.
In between activities, there is a stop for a delightful lunch, and the route passes by the historic plantations Ellen and Leliëndaal. The guide shares fascinating insights into the unique history of the plantations and the remnants that are sometimes concealed within the forest.
