A Journey Through Vibrant Streets and Towering Heights

As a biologist and environmental enthusiast, I often find myself drawn to places where nature and culture intertwine seamlessly. My recent adventure to Guatapé, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of Colombia, was no exception. The allure of colorful streets and the promise of breathtaking views from El Peñol rock were too tempting to resist.

The day began with a traditional Antioquian breakfast, a delightful introduction to the local flavors. Our guide, Mateo, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories and insights that painted a vivid picture of the region’s history and culture. His enthusiasm was infectious, making the long drive from Medellín feel like a breeze.

Upon arriving in Guatapé, the vibrant colors of the town greeted us with open arms. The streets were alive with energy, each corner revealing a new burst of color and creativity. Riding through the town in a Chiva bus was an experience in itself, offering a unique perspective of the lively streets and their artistic zócalos.

Conquering El Peñol: A Test of Courage and Reward

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the climb up El Peñol rock. Standing at the base, I felt a familiar flutter of nerves, a reminder of my fear of heights. But the promise of the view from the top was a powerful motivator. Step by step, I ascended the 740 steps, pausing occasionally to catch my breath and steady my nerves.

Reaching the summit was a triumph. The panoramic view was nothing short of spectacular, a sweeping vista of lush landscapes and shimmering waters. For someone who spends much of their time advocating for the preservation of such landscapes, it was a poignant reminder of why I do what I do.

After the exhilarating climb, a boat ride across the Guatapé reservoir provided a serene contrast. The gentle lapping of the water and the sight of distant islands created a sense of tranquility. As we glided across the lake, Mateo pointed out one of Pablo Escobar’s former homes, a stark reminder of Colombia’s complex history.

The tour concluded with a visit to a llama farm, an experience that was both amusing and slightly out of my comfort zone. While some of my fellow travelers found the llamas charming, I opted to observe from a distance, preferring the company of the surrounding hills and their quiet beauty.
