Parque Tematico Replica del Viejo Penol - The Replica of Old Peñol is a theme park that preserves the memory of the old town submerged between 1971 and 1978 to create the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir.
The replica recreates the most iconic sites within the main park, such as the park, the parish church, and the town hall, along with charming balconies and colorful structures that serve as commercial spaces offering beautiful local crafts and souvenirs.
This park has become the main tourist attraction for the municipality and is a project to recover the historical memory of a town whose flooding and relocation are filled with nostalgic memories for its residents, but also of heroism and resilience. In their struggle, they rose again like the phoenix, preserving the legacy of a municipality whose history is divided into two: the Old and the New Peñol, as it is traditionally known.
- Guatape / Piedra Del Penol - Undoubtedly, the Piedra del Peñol has become one of the major tourist attractions in Antioquia. Also known as “El Peñol de Guatapé,” this natural marvel stands 220 meters high and features over 700 steps leading to the top, where visitors can enjoy the view of the 2,200 hectares of the dam. Discover more activities available in Guatapé here.
Let’s begin with the basics: what is La Piedra del Peñol? It is a batholith, a large mass of rock formed by the cooling of the Earth’s surface. Now that you know what it is, let’s delve into the story behind the Piedra del Peñol.
Before gaining its current significance, the Piedra del Peñol was reportedly a sacred site for the indigenous people who lived here before the Spanish arrived. Legend has it that it was the target of multiple kidnapping attempts by the devil, resulting in a large crack on one of its sides.
- Plazoleta de los Zocalos - Despite its relatively recent construction in 2010, the Plazoleta El Zócalo has become a key tourist attraction in Guatapé and one of the most photographed spots in the municipality.
It was conceived to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the municipality, encouraging residents to embrace their town’s roots. Through initiatives promoting zocalization, locals display figures on their homes’ facades that narrate the local history and its people.
This is how Plazoleta El Zócalo came to be, a pedestrian area connecting with Calle del Recuerdo, Parque Principal, and the Malecón Turístico, emblematic symbols of local tourism that together tell a meaningful and colorful story.
The plaza has become an ideal gathering place for locals and visitors, offering a gastronomic and commercial experience, and allowing them to admire its vibrant buildings and stands filled with plinths.
- Malecon de Guatape - The Guatapé boardwalk is one of the town’s most popular tourist destinations, offering views of the impressive Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir, which surrounds much of the town center.
This modern infrastructure and public space, thanks to recent renovations between 2018 and 2019, spans 12,000 square meters for the enjoyment of tourists and locals, with 6,000 square meters dedicated to green areas.
The area also features bicycle parking, children’s play areas, and other amenities for families, couples, or friends to enjoy.
Around this location, various tourist service providers offer visitors gastronomic and recreational experiences, including boat rides, ships, and souvenir sales, among others.
