Grand Bassin - Grand Bassin, located deep within Mauritius, is one of the island’s most sacred and tranquil sites. Situated about 6 km southeast of Mare aux Vacoas, this natural crater lake is 550 meters above sea level in a secluded mountain area, surrounded by lush greenery. Known as Ganga Talao, it holds great spiritual significance for Mauritians of the Hindu faith, who consider it a holy lake connected to the sacred waters of the Ganges River in India. Each year, during the Maha Shivaratri festival, thousands of pilgrims walk long distances carrying decorated kanwars to honor Lord Shiva in a moving display of devotion. Around the lake stands a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, along with shrines to other deities such as Hanuman and Lakshmi, and the towering statue of Lord Shiva welcomes visitors. Grand Bassin is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of unity, culture, and peace, offering both pilgrims and tourists a profound spiritual experience in Mauritius.
