- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 8-hour tour with a convenient hotel pick-up from any location in Mauritius. You will be warmly welcomed by our guide, and after settling into your comfortable vehicle, you’ll embark on your first destination.
Your journey begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic landscapes, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained inactive for the past 700,000 years; experts suggest there is a potential for future activity.
A major highlight is the 360-degree view of Curepipe town and the stunning vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, proceed to the Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the southern part of the island.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among dense forests. It offers a serene escape from the usual hustle and bustle, providing a perfect spot for a few moments of relaxation. The reservoir also presents a picturesque view worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue your journey to Ganga Talao, commonly known as Grand Bassin, a crater lake situated about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. Along its shores, you’ll find a temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities.
During your visit to this sacred site, you’ll be captivated by the enormous statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, the Hindu God Lord Shiva is depicted as serene and peaceful. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao attracts many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and its beautiful surroundings. The lake is approximately 18 meters deep and teeming with fish.
Your full-day scenic tour of the southwest concludes with transportation back to your hotel.
- Alexandra Falls - The next stop is Alexandra Falls, located about 700 meters above sea level, and is one of the most popular natural sites in Mauritius.
You may have seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is not only famous for its breathtaking beauty but also offers visitors a unique experience with nature.
While there, don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. For a complete view, you can climb a wooden platform.
To your right is Alexandra Falls, appearing as a tranquil white stream cascading over rocky outcrops. You’ll also enjoy a view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. It’s a sight that soothes the eyes.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best spot for a panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, stop here for a stunning panorama. The viewpoint is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and offers a truly spectacular view. It’s a must-visit location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne.
Amidst the untouched rainforest of Mauritius, you’ll find nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and the unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
You’ll be amazed at the elevation of the viewing area above the gorge below, with a lovely waterfall to your right.
The national park is renowned for its diverse endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint provides an overview of its true essence.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to numerous species of wild animals and birds.
- Bois Cheri Tea Factory and Tea Museum - Then, proceed to the Bois Chéri Tea Factory. A guide will lead you through the factory and tea plantation, sharing the history, stories, and significance of tea production in Mauritius.
After the guided tour of the tea factory, you’ll visit the tea production museum to learn more about the history of tea in Mauritius.
Bois Chéri offers a stunning panoramic view of the island’s southern region. Today, Bois Chéri produces a new range of flavored teas, green teas, and herbal teas, which you can sample during your visit.
Your visit to the Bois Chéri plantation includes:
- A guided tour of the Bois Cheri tea factory
- A visit to the tea museum
- A visit to the tea plantation
- A tea tasting with a panoramic view of the flora and fauna
- Gris Gris Beach - Next, head to Souillac to witness the breathtaking view of Gris-Gris. The allure of Gris-Gris lies in its scenery, where high cliffs drop dramatically to the sea, and the refreshing winds of the Indian Ocean blow year-round.
Far from the serene setting of calm seas and tranquil scenery, Gris-Gris Beach is renowned for its sea cliffs, offering visitors a magnificent view from above. This is undoubtedly a sight worth seeing. The absence of coral reefs in this part of the island allows large waves to crash directly onto the cliffs.
You’ll have an excellent vantage point on the cliffs to witness the waves crashing against the rocks.
Afterward, you’ll visit a local restaurant to enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch, featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. You’ll have options, and the chef will explain and inquire about your preferences.
- La Vanille Nature Park - Finally, head to La Vanille Crocodile Park, where you’ll discover the flora and fauna native to Mauritius. You’ll have the opportunity to observe animals in the reserve, including Nile Crocodiles, tenrecs, eels, iguanas, and turtles from Madagascar and Seychelles, all in accordance with the animal welfare act.
You’ll be introduced to a collection of fossils of animals now extinct in Mauritius and surrounding islands, such as the dodo and the elephant bird of Madagascar. Additionally, La Vanille Nature Park features an insectarium with a rare collection of species from around the world.
The park spans 3.5 hectares in the island’s south and is home to many other animals, including monkeys, bats, deer, geckos, wild boars, and carp, to name a few. The site also houses 2,000 Nile crocodiles, allowing you to observe them at various stages of growth.
