Gotta do the Volcano Bike Ride - The guides are all about providing a great trip down the volcano safely. Be prepared to go fast! Some in our group did not realize how fast 20-25 mph is on a bike and chose to sit out the second ride because of that. It is nice to have the whole lane to ride in versus just the bike lane. The scenery is gorgeous and the third trip through the town and fields was so much fun. Major kudos to our guides for leading such a big group down safely!

Great morning of fun!! - Great experience as a solo traveler! Easy to book and clear details in write up and itinerary! Easy to find, chose this over the crazy early sunrise one and SO glad - watched the sunrise on the beach with coffee then headed to the 7:30am meet up! Easy waiver and cold bottled water and granola bars waiting and warm welcome! Love the small group, personal feel. Drive up was beautiful and full of fun history, stories and scenery (45 min), then the ride!! Outstanding option to go unguided (if you want to fast or carefree) or guided - I chose guided first run down and unguided second time! Both super fun and safe and thrilling! Then about 30 min outing in little town just enough to get a coffee and bathroom break, then the final ride down to starting point! Great for anyone!

The Volcano was so... - The Volcano was so beautiful and the guide did a great job of checking experience levels to make sure everyone had a fun and safe trip. We went up the volcano twice, stopped at a cute town for lunch/brunch the biked an easier road afterwards. This experience was completely unforgettable!

Not what we expected - We were taken just below the summit. Unloaded our bikes, the bikes seemed older and needed maintenance. My brakes squeak the whole time I use them. We did maybe a 20 minute ride down. They loaded our bikes back up and we did the same route again which was not what we unexpected. Them they drove us to a town where we were on our own for 45 minutes. We got on our bikes and individually, went down the rest of the way to Paia. They did discuss some things in the van ride to the summit, but they weren’t mic’d so if you were in the back, you couldn’t hear anything. We did not go through two towns, it was not one continuous 26 mile ride, there wasn’t a history lesson.

Reckless with Safety Badmouthing Law Enforcement - The tour began with being picked up and taken to the business location. There they had us sign comprehensive waivers and told us to load up in the van.
All the way up the mountain (which is NOT to the top), there was no brief or familiarization with the local terrain as the write up says. Once at the 6,500 foot elevation, we were given a safety briefing and a placard explaining the dos and don’ts, but the guide then told everyone they could violate virtually every one of the rules and encouraged riders to just go down the hill on their own.
While on the second descent, the group passed a National Park Ranger who conducted a car stop on the chase van. His purpose for doing so was to assess the safety of the tour, since most riders had abandoned the guide and were streaming down the mountain at their own pace and speed, spread out oven and mile.
Afterward, the driver who was stopped proceeded to lambast the Ranger for daring to stop her, and ranted on anti law enforcement rhetoric for about 20-minutes.
While the tour can be fun, this tour is reckless and disrespectful to law enforcement that was just trying to ensure the groups’s safety.
Finally, there was a stop at a cafe, but nothing was included in the $187 cost of the ride. There was a water and granola bar provided at the office in the beginning, but nothing the shop.
It’s up to the rider if he or she feels it’s appropriate to bad mouth officers looking out for the group’s safety, and whether a guide ought to be telling the group to completely disregard the rules. Not only is it reckless, but opens the company to huge civil liability if a biker got in an accident.
Disappointing.

Norwegian cruise people - Don’t book the Maui guided bike ride with Mountain Riders - I purchased the guided bike ride from Norwegian Cruise Lines (as part of a 7 day Hawaii island cruise) and Mountain Riders provided the guided bike ride.
The terms and conditions provided at time of purchase ( by NCL) did not say anything about a minimum speed that you had to ride the bike on the downhill run.
According to Mountain Riders, if you ride slower than 20 mph (32.2km/hr) you are not allowed to ride the bike and must return to the van. This is what happened to me.
I am a competent bike rider, but prefer not to go fast (for my own safety plus I wanted to enjoy the views from the crater).
Such a disappointing experience.
Don’t book the Maui bike ride with Mountain Riders!!!
