You’ll also have the opportunity to don samurai kimono and accessories, stepping back in time to embody the warriors who once protected the ‘daimyo’ (feudal lord) and his territory.

Built at the conclusion of the Warring States Period, Matsumoto Castle stands as the most magnificent emblem of the city’s feudal past and samurai legacy. This experience offers deeper insights into the feudal domain once governed by the daimyo and his samurai.

Today, the people of Matsumoto take great pride in this heritage, which can be experienced firsthand through various historical activities available in the city. Among these activities, traditional ‘katana’ (sword) fighting and ‘hankyu’ (archery) are two of the most popular options, both of which are included in this experience.

Samurai utilized both close combat and long-range weapons, including archery. After your katana session, you will receive guidance on using a hankyu bow in a specially designed room for this experience.

• Please note that the stairs to reach the top of Matsumoto Castle’s tower are steep and narrow.
• In Japan, authentic katanas are classified as illegal weapons under strict licensing laws. Tourists can see them in museums or specialty shops, but theatrical swords are widely used in performances, training, and during our samurai experience.
• This activity focuses on proper sword techniques and kata accessible to all including families. It does not involve any type of slicing or cutting of objects.
• There is no minimum age requirements
• Children less than 6 years old can participate for free (kid’s outfits and foam swords are included at no additional fees)
