• Sasso Barisano - This area of the Sassi has been beautifully restored with UNESCO funding. Matera has been recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1993. From Sasso Barisano, visitors can admire the stunning facade of the Cathedral, which was constructed in 1270 in the Apulian Romanesque style.
• Chiesa Rupestre di San Giuliano o Madonna Delle Grazie - Located on Via del Sasso Caveoso in Matera, the church of Madonna delle Grazie was once dedicated to Sant’Eustachio, as noted in the pastoral visit of Mons. Saracen in 1543-1544. The entrance features a bell tower and a terracotta bas-relief of the Madonna and Child. Inside, there is a grand baroque altar near the original iconostasis, with two sculpted domes and visible apse arches on the ceiling. The right wall displays a Crucifixion scene, accompanied by two angels, with the Mother and John at Christ’s feet. Another wall depicts St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. Behind the altar, the ceiling area features coffered panels with decorative motifs, while the corresponding wall showcases a painting of Saint Lucia.
• Piazza San Pietro Caveoso - Situated in the heart of Sasso Caveoso, this piazza offers a breathtaking view of the Gravina canyon. It is a unique and thrilling setting, rich in history.
• Casa grotta del Casalnuovo - At Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo, visitors can experience an authentic Sassi home, complete with original furniture and daily tools used by the family who once lived there. These Case Grotta are genuine ethnographic collections, small museums showcasing everyday and work objects from the time when the Sassi were inhabited, before the depopulation in the 1950s. Inside, the original rooms and furnishings of the house are recreated as they were before the ancient districts were vacated in the late 1950s.
