- Martkopi Monastery - Nestled deep within Tbilisi National Park, this 6th-century monastery offers profound tranquility and seclusion. Situated away from bustling tourist paths, it rests atop a forested ridge. An optional hike through the ancient woods is available for those eager to fully engage with the region’s biodiversity. It’s an ideal location for meditation and nature photography.
- Udabno - As the journey approaches the semi-desert, the settlement of Udabno emerges. Here, a striking contrast is observed: expansive, lush almond orchards thriving amidst the arid steppe. A stroll along the tree rows reveals a “green oasis” effect against the dry horizon. In early spring, the trees are adorned with beautiful pink and white blossoms; in summer and autumn, they form vivid green lines against the yellow landscape. This offers a unique photographic opportunity and a glimpse into local life in this remote area.
- Kapatadze Lake - Positioned on the path between forests and semi-desert, this saline lake offers a picturesque pause in the journey. The landscape is serene and open, providing excellent photography opportunities. Depending on the season, reflections of the sky may be seen on the water, or the textured white salt crust of the shore may be visible. It is a peaceful natural site that enhances the geological diversity of the experience.
- David Gareja Monastery - A significant historical site in Georgia, located on the semi-desert slopes bordering Azerbaijan. The visit to the Lavra monastery allows appreciation of the unique architecture carved into the rock face and the rugged beauty of the surrounding badlands.
- Gareja colorful dunes viewpoint - A hidden geological marvel in the semi-desert. These multi-colored hills (with striations of red, yellow, and mineral green) create a surreal, “Mars-like” landscape. A walk here offers enjoyment of the views and the absolute quiet of the steppe.
- Sagarejo - On the return journey, a stop at a private family wine cellar in this region is possible. Here, organic natural wines made in traditional Qvevri clay jars can be tasted, accompanied by Georgian cheese and warm hospitality.

Venture beyond the usual tourist paths and explore the striking contrasts of Georgia on this specially curated private tour. Tailored for nature enthusiasts, this journey takes you away from the crowds to uncover two unique worlds in one day.
The adventure starts in the tranquil beauty of Tbilisi National Park, where the secluded Martkopi Monastery awaits. Here, participants have the exclusive opportunity to enjoy a peaceful hike through ancient forests, providing a serene escape into nature.
Experience a dramatic transformation as the tour moves to the surreal Rainbow Mountains and David Gareji. Swap the lush woodlands for the vibrant, multi-colored hills of the semi-desert and expansive open steppes.
The tour is designed with your comfort and pace in mind. This is an engaging experience into the wild diversity of the Caucasus, perfectly concluded with an optional visit to a traditional family cellar for genuine natural wines.
- Weather & Itinerary Adjustments: Because this tour explores diverse natural zones (from mountain forests to semi-desert steppes), the itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions. In the event of heavy snow, rain, or impassable mud, your guide reserves the right to adjust the route or substitute stops to ensure your safety and comfort. We will always do our best to provide an equally scenic alternative.
- Please note that Martkopi Ghvtaeba and David Gareji are active monasteries, not just museums. During major religious holidays or special services, access to specific interiors, caves, or the main church may be limited by the monks. In such cases, we will explore the extensive exterior grounds and focus on the surrounding nature and history.
- The clay paths on the hills can be slippery, even when dry, due to loose soil and gravel.
- For your safety and enjoyment, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip are essential. We strongly recommend avoiding smooth-soled sneakers or city shoes.
- The trails at Martkopi can be muddy, particularly in the spring or after recent rainfall.
- As we descend to the Udabno and David Gareji steppes, the climate becomes arid, open, and often warmer. The semi-desert is known for its vast open spaces and occasional strong winds.
- Due to the remote nature of this route, local dining venues serve simple traditional cuisine and cannot accommodate strict dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten-free, halal), so we recommend packing suitable personal snacks if required.
- Please remember that these are active religious sites, not museums; visitors are expected to respect local traditions by adhering to a modest dress code (covering shoulders and knees) and strictly following your guide’s instructions at all times.
- The tour involves walking at Martkopi and the hike at David Gareji (uphill).
- We begin at higher altitudes in the Martkopi woodland range (approx. 1,100m). Here, the air is crisp and cool; in winter and early spring, you may encounter snow and frost.
