Day 1: Journey from Marrakech to Toubkal Refuge via Imlil and Mizane Valley
Marrakech - Stop 1: Marrakech to Asni Village
Leaving Marrakech, the journey heads south across the Haouz Plain towards the impressive Toubkal Massif, renowned for its rugged peaks and deep valleys. The route passes through the delightful village of Asni, where the road begins to meander through the mountain foothills. As Imlil approaches, stunning views of the Oued Rhirhaia Valley and scattered Berber villages perched on the hillsides come into view.
Imlil - Stop 2: Imlil to Aremd and Sidi Chamarouch
In Imlil, the vehicle is left behind as the hike begins with a professional mountain guide. The trek starts up the Mizane Valley, passing through Aremd, the largest settlement in the valley. Aremd provides insight into traditional Berber life, with terraced farms and herds of goats and cattle navigating the narrow paths. The fertile valley has been cultivated for generations, producing crops like maize, potatoes, and walnuts.
Aremd - Stop 3: Sidi Chamarouch
Continuing east, the sacred shrine of Sidi Chamarouch is reached, nestled near a charming waterfall. This site, visited by both tourists and Muslim pilgrims, features unique dwellings that blend seamlessly with the rocky landscape. Non-Muslims can admire the shrine from the stone bridge.
Toubkal(4167)m - Stop 4: Toubkal Refuge
From Sidi Chamarouch, the ascent continues steadily, following winding and zigzagging trails through the stunning landscape of the Mizane Valley. The hike ascends higher into the Atlas Mountains, crossing the snowline as the Toubkal Refuge is approached at an altitude of 3,206m. This refuge, nestled in the heart of the mountains, serves as the overnight destination, offering a tranquil retreat after approximately 5 hours of walking.
Day 2: Summit Jebel Toubkal (4,165m), Descend to Imlil, and Return to Marrakech
Toubkal(4167)m - Stop 1: Ascent to Jebel Toubkal
The day begins early with the ascent to Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The trail leads up the south cirque, crossing a creek above the refuge, and into scree fields that cover the mountain. This section presents a challenging yet rewarding trek, as the loose pebbles and altitude add to the adventure. Despite the difficulty, the breathtaking views along the way make every step worthwhile.
Mount Toubkal - Stop 2: Mount Toubkal Summit
Upon reaching the ridge, the path levels out into a plateau, making the final stretch to the summit relatively easy. From the top, stunning, unobstructed views in every direction await—from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and the Anti-Atlas and desert in the south. These incredible panoramas justify why the Roman scholar Pliny once described the High Atlas as “the most wonderful mountains in all of Africa.”
Marrakech - Stop 3: Descent and Return to Marrakech
After enjoying the views at the summit, the descent back down the mountain begins, retracing steps to Imlil. From there, a car transfer back to Marrakech concludes this incredible adventure.
