Jemaa el-Fnaa - Jamaa Alfna Square (Amazigh: ⴰⴱⴰⵔⴰⵣ ⵏ ⵊⴰⵎⵄ ⵍⴼⵏⴰ, Arabic: ساحة جامع الفنا, “Place of the Mosque of the Departed”) is a renowned public square located in the southwest of the Medina in Marrakech, Morocco. This vibrant and traditional hub, especially lively at night, draws over a million visitors annually. Jemaa el-Fna showcases the rich diversity of Moroccan identity, with representatives from various cultures including Arabs, Berbers, and Gnaouas. Recognized as an intangible cultural heritage since 2008 (initially proclaimed in 2001) and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, “The cultural space of the Jemaa el-Fna square” is a testament to Morocco’s cultural richness.

Koutoubia Mosque - The original mosque was constructed in 1148 by Sultan Almohade Abdelmoumen following his conquest of Marrakech. A second, similarly sized version was built around 1158, which is the current structure, as the first was demolished. The minaret’s construction was completed by Abu Yusuf Ben Tachafin around 1195. The Koutoubia Mosque is a significant example of Almohad architecture and Moroccan mosque design. Its 77-meter minaret, adorned with various geometric patterns and topped with a spire and metal orbs, likely inspired other structures such as the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat, built shortly thereafter. The minaret is also a prominent urban landmark and a key symbol of Marrakech.

Bahia Palace - The Bahia Palace (قصر الباهية in Arabic, ⵜⴰⴳⴰⴷⵉⵔⵜ ⵏ ⵍⴱⴰⵀⵢⴰ in Berber, Bāhiya, meaning “the beautiful, the brilliant”) is a former 19th-century palace spanning eight hectares, designed in Moorish/Islamic style, located in Marrakech, Morocco. Now a museum, it stands as a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture and art, a significant monument of the country’s cultural heritage, and a major tourist attraction. The architect Si Mohammed El Mekki (1857-1926), a student of Captain Erckman, head of the French mission in Marrakech, is credited with most of the work.
