Muddy Adventures and Turtle Tales: A Day in Marmaris
When the opportunity to explore Turtle Beach and Koycegiz Lake presented itself, I couldn’t resist. With promises of mud baths, ancient tombs, and encounters with loggerhead turtles, it was a day of adventure I had to experience firsthand.
Muddy Beginnings
The day began with a sense of anticipation as we were picked up from our hotel in Marmaris. The sun was already casting its golden glow over the town, promising a day filled with adventure. Our guides, Dimitri and Oskar, were a dynamic duo, with Dimitri’s humor setting the tone for the day. His jokes and stories had us all laughing as we made our way to the first stop: the famous mud baths of Dalyan.
Stepping into the mud baths was like entering another world. The mud was slippery, and I couldn’t help but laugh as I tried to keep my balance. Covered head to toe in the healing mud, I felt like a kid again, playing in the dirt without a care in the world. After letting the mud dry, a cold shower awaited to wash it all off, leaving my skin feeling rejuvenated. The photographers captured every moment, but there was no pressure to buy the photos, which was a nice touch.
A Feast for the Senses
With the mud washed away, it was time to refuel. Lunch was a simple yet satisfying affair of rice, burgers, salad, and bread. As we dined by the river, Dimitri regaled us with tales of the ancient Rock Tombs of Caunos, visible in the distance. The stories of kings and legends added a layer of mystique to the already enchanting scenery.
After lunch, we boarded a covered boat for a serene journey through the reed-lined canals. The gentle sway of the boat and the soft rustle of the reeds created a tranquil atmosphere. We passed by quaint villages and marinas, each with its own charm. The highlight of the boat ride was undoubtedly the sight of the Tombs of the Kings, carved majestically into the rock face. Holding a blue crab was an unexpected delight, and for those inclined, there was the option to purchase a tub to savor later.
Turtle Encounters and Ocean Dips
Our final destination was Turtle Beach, a stretch of sand that seemed to go on forever. The anticipation of seeing the loggerhead turtles was palpable. As we fed the crab carcasses into the water, we were rewarded with the sight of these magnificent creatures gliding gracefully through the sea. It was a moment of pure magic, one that will stay with me for a long time.
With the turtles having made their appearance, it was time to relax. We rented sun loungers and parasols, setting up camp on the warm sand. The ocean beckoned, and I couldn’t resist diving into the warm, inviting waters. The waves were gentle, perfect for a leisurely swim. The beach was well-equipped with a café, changing rooms, showers, and toilets, making it easy to spend the afternoon soaking up the sun.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Marmaris, tired but content. The Turtle Beach and Koycegiz Lake Tour had delivered on its promise of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. It was a day well spent, and one that I would recommend to anyone looking to experience the beauty and charm of this part of Turkey.
