This walking tour offers a glimpse into the captivating transformation of this aristocratic estate, from medieval farmland to a public park, encapsulating over 500 years of Irish history.
The tour kicks off at the Wicklow Way starting point, where participants will uncover some of the intriguing stories nestled within this 120-hectare urban sanctuary at the base of the Dublin Mountains. As you stroll through the historic grounds once owned by Barnaby Fitzpatrick, you’ll hear the fascinating story of his transition from Irish king to English baron in the 1500s, following the land’s confiscation from Cistercian monks.
Participants will meander through ancient woodlands, encounter intriguing art installations, and admire the beautifully restored walled gardens. Here, they will meet the vibrant residents of the aviary, including peacocks that roam freely throughout the gardens, before concluding the tour at the magnificent Georgian Marlay House.
