The town originated in the early 17th century around the site of a former Carthusian monastery known as Gripsholm Charterhouse. Following the Reformation, when Sweden adopted Lutheranism under King Gustav Vasa, the monastery was dissolved, and the area gradually evolved into a town. The name Mariefred translates to “Peace of Mary,” a nod to the original monastery.
