- Moray - Maras is a charming town situated in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, approximately 40 kilometers north of Cusco. It is renowned for its salt evaporation ponds, which have been operational since the time of the Incas. These ponds are located four kilometers north of the town, nestled in a canyon that leads to the Rio Vilcanota and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
The Maras region is easily accessible via a paved road that connects to the main route through the Sacred Valley, linking Cuzco with nearby towns. Notable tourist attractions in the area include the colonial church, the nearby Moray Inca ruins, the local salt evaporation ponds, and the picturesque surroundings.
- Salt Mine of Maras - The salt ponds of Maras.
Since pre-Inca times, salt has been harvested in Maras by evaporating salty water from a local underground stream. The water is channeled into a complex network of small channels, allowing it to flow gradually into several hundred ancient terraced ponds. These ponds have been utilized since Inca times as a means of economic trade.
- Moray - This remarkable complex is located 74 km (46 miles) from Cuzco City, at an elevation of 3,500 masl (11,483 fasl). It is an exceptional archaeological site featuring natural gigantic holes, around which terraces were constructed with their own irrigation aqueducts. The notable aspect is the temperature variation throughout the year between the top and the bottom of the hole, which can differ by 15 degrees Celsius. The largest hole is 150 meters deep, and the terraces average 1.8 meters in height. These terraces, built over retaining walls filled with fertile soil and irrigated by intricate systems, allowed for the cultivation of over 250 plant species. The terraces served as Inca laboratories for crop experimentation. Moray is rich in history and scenic beauty.
Other research suggests that the site was used for astronomical observation and monitoring climatic changes. This was achieved by tracking the sunlight and shadows cast on the area’s high mountains.
