This tour uncovers the intriguing origins of Ecuadorian chocolate. The finest quality chocolate emerged from a rainforest conservation initiative launched in Ecuador in 2007 by the nonprofit foundation, Third Millennium Alliance. The chocolate produced from this soil originates from ancient trees, with genetic studies tracing back 5,300 years, according to Carbon-14 data and theobromine found in pods by Francisco Valdez during his archaeological research. These trees were believed to be extinct until this study confirmed their 100% Nacional genotype purity. During this tour, participants will have the opportunity to process their own chocolate, from collecting cocoa beans to crafting their own chocolate bar. The tour includes a visit to one of the 14 plantations in Rocafuerte, known for producing the highest quality cocoa beans used in the finest chocolate bars. This tour is highly recommended for cruise travelers.
