In the early morning hours (around midnight), the ascent to the summit begins. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. The wind and cold at this altitude and time can be intense. The climb is done in darkness for several hours with frequent, short breaks. At Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft), a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak awaits. Finally, Uhuru Peak is reached - the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
After a brief moment to admire the African plains and celebrate the achievement, the descent to Horombo Hut begins. In the evening, a final dinner on the mountain is enjoyed, followed by a well-deserved rest.

The Marangu route, affectionately known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the most historic and well-established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. It uniquely offers dormitory-style sleeping huts instead of tents. Mandara and Kibo Huts each contain 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut has 120. Mattresses and pillows are supplied, but hikers need to bring their own sleeping bags.
The huts include communal dining areas and basic restroom facilities, with flush toilets available at the lower huts and long-drop toilets at Kibo Hut. Many hikers prefer the Marangu route for its gentle incline and straightforward path. However, the shorter duration can pose challenges for acclimatization. The route approaches from the southeast, with both ascent and descent using the same trail, making it a sociable yet busy option.
