Mount Longonot, one of the most picturesque peaks in the Rift Valley, stands at 2,776 meters and features a jagged crater rim that provides spectacular views. This dormant volcano, which towers 1,000 meters above the scorching valley floor, was formed 400,000 years ago and last erupted in the 1860s. The park, spanning just 52 square kilometers, was established primarily to preserve the volcano’s unique ecosystem. The name ‘Longonot’ is derived from the Maasai term ‘Olo Nongot,’ meaning ‘Mountain of Many Summits.’
