Surfing Through History: My Adventure in Mahahual’s Chacchoben & Bacalar
When the allure of ancient Mayan ruins and the promise of a vibrant lagoon called, I knew I had to experience the Chacchoben & Bacalar Combo Excursion. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty.
A Journey Through Time and Taste
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve had my fair share of adventures, but the Chacchoben & Bacalar Combo excursion in Mahahual was something truly special. My wife and I were greeted by Moises, who led us to the start of our journey. Our guide, Genesis, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing the rich history of the Mayan culture during our hour-long ride to Chacchoben. His passion for the subject was infectious, and I found myself hanging onto every word.
We made a delightful pit stop at “Pineapple City,” where we tasted the sweetest honey pineapple. It was a refreshing treat that set the tone for the rest of the day. Genesis also took us to a local cemetery, where the vibrant decorations on the mausoleums were a testament to the local customs and traditions. It was a beautiful reminder of how different cultures honor their ancestors.
Exploring the Mystical Chacchoben
Arriving at the Chacchoben ruins, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the ancient temples. Genesis guided us through the site, pointing out fascinating details and sharing stories that brought the ruins to life. We learned about the allspice tree, a bark used to make an alcoholic beverage, and a leaf with properties stronger than marijuana. It was a captivating blend of history and nature that left me in awe.
Exodus, our driver and unofficial photographer, captured every moment with his camera, ensuring we had memories to take home. His enthusiasm and attention to detail made the experience even more enjoyable. As someone who loves to document my travels, I appreciated having someone else behind the lens for a change.
The Enchanting Bacalar Lagoon
Our next stop was the stunning Bacalar Lagoon, known for its mesmerizing shades of blue. We boarded a boat and set sail through the “7 color lagoon,” where the water’s beauty was beyond words. We even took a refreshing dip in the cenote, a natural sinkhole that added to the lagoon’s allure.
The boat ride was filled with laughter and learning, as we were taught a new salute for taking shots: “Arriba, abajo, al Centro, y pa’dentro.” It was a fun addition to the day, and we made sure to practice it with some local tequila. Afterward, we stopped at Taco Loco for some of the best pork and fish tacos I’ve ever tasted. The flavors were a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
As we made our way back to Costa Maya, the gentle sway of the bus lulled us into a peaceful nap. Reflecting on the day’s adventures, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The Chacchoben & Bacalar Combo excursion was a journey I’ll never forget, and I can’t wait to return to this sun-soaked paradise.
