From Waves to Ruins: A Surfer’s Journey Through Costa Maya
In search of a different kind of adventure, I ventured to Mahahual to explore the Mayan ruins and local gems. Join me as I recount my journey through ancient history and vibrant culture.
Discovering the Ancient Wonders of Chacchoben
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s rhythm and the stories it whispers. But every now and then, I find myself craving a different kind of adventure—one that takes me away from the waves and into the heart of history. That’s how I found myself in Mahahual, embarking on the Costa Maya Journey to explore the Mayan ruins and local gems.
The day began with a bit of a maze through the bustling shopping district near the cruise port. The vibrant energy of the place was infectious, but I was eager to meet Jhoana, our guide for the day. Once we found our way out, Jhoana greeted us with a warm smile and an enthusiasm that was contagious. Her knowledge of the area and the Mayan civilization was impressive, and I knew we were in for a treat.
Our journey to the Zona Arqueologica De Chaachoben was comfortable, thanks to Raoul, our friendly taxi driver. As we drove, Jhoana shared fascinating insights about the region and its people, setting the stage for the adventure ahead. Upon arrival, we were joined by a local ruins guide who, alongside Jhoana, brought the ancient temples to life with their stories and explanations.
A Walk Through Time
Stepping into the ruins of Chacchoben was like stepping back in time. The air was thick with history, and the lush greenery surrounding the temples added to the mystique. While we couldn’t climb the main temples, there were plenty of smaller structures to explore. The uneven terrain and stairs made me grateful for my choice of footwear—definitely leave the flip-flops at home for this one.
As we wandered through the site, we were treated to the sight of a wild spider monkey swinging through the trees. It was a reminder of the vibrant life that still thrives in these ancient grounds. Jhoana and the ruins guide shared stories of the Mayan civilization, their architectural prowess, and the significance of the temples. It was a humbling experience to stand in the shadows of such history.
The grounds were a botanical wonderland, with sacred palms, coconut palms, and pepper plants creating a lush canopy. It was easy to lose myself in the beauty of it all, imagining the lives of those who once called this place home. The experience was both educational and awe-inspiring, a perfect blend of nature and history.
Savoring Local Flavors
After our exploration of the ruins, we made a delightful detour to the town of Pedro Antonio Santos. Known for its honey pineapples, the town offered a sweet treat that was hard to resist. Tasting the fresh pineapple straight from the fields was a highlight of the journey, a burst of flavor that perfectly complemented the day’s adventures.
As we made our way back to Mahahual, the iconic lighthouse came into view, standing tall against the backdrop of the sea. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the day’s journey and soak in the stunning views. The Costa Maya Journey was more than just a tour; it was a connection to a timeless civilization and a chance to experience the local culture in a way that felt authentic and intimate.
For those of you who, like me, are always chasing the next wave or the next adventure, this journey into the heart of Costa Maya is one you won’t want to miss. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best stories are found not in the ocean’s depths, but in the echoes of the past.
