A Cozy Retreat in Mafra: Embrace the Rainy Charm

Mafra, a quaint town just north of Lisbon, offers a delightful escape for families seeking indoor adventures during a rainy weekend. As the skies open up, the town’s rich history and cultural treasures provide a warm embrace, inviting you to explore its hidden gems without the worry of getting drenched.

Start your day with a visit to the Mafra Palace Tour, where the grandeur of the National Palace of Mafra awaits. This 8-hour private tour, available from 9 AM to 5 PM, is perfect for families looking to delve into Portugal’s baroque history. The palace’s library, often hailed as the most beautiful in the world, is a must-see, offering a glimpse into the past with its vast collection of ancient books. As you wander through the palace, marvel at the Basilica’s six unique organs and the exquisite gardens that tell tales of Portugal’s rich heritage. The tour also includes a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast, with a stop at the breathtaking Roca Cape, the westernmost point of mainland Portugal. This journey is not just about history; it’s about creating memories with your loved ones, wrapped in the warmth of Mafra’s cultural embrace.

Savor the Flavors: Wine Tasting and More

For those who appreciate the finer things in life, a wine tasting experience at Mafra Vineyards is a delightful way to spend a rainy afternoon. Available from 9 AM to 5 PM, this excursion offers a taste of Portugal’s rich viticulture, with at least five different wines to sample, accompanied by seasoned olives and toasted bread. As you sip on these exquisite wines, let the cool Atlantic breezes and the lush surroundings of the vineyard transport you to a world of tranquility.

The tour also includes a visit to the majestic Mafra Palace, where you can explore its baroque architecture and the impressive collection of bells in the basilica. The palace’s library, a historical highlight, houses valued catalogues that are sure to captivate history enthusiasts. Conclude your day with a trip to the charming village of Ericeira, known for its surfing and fishing traditions. Here, you can enjoy the stunning sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs, even if the rain keeps you indoors. A recent review from 2020 captures the essence of this experience:

Loving the wine in Portugal - Our second day out with Rui. After a drive through the hills we arrived at Quinta Santa Maria in Gidril, a village perched on the edge of a valley. We were greeted by our British expat host who guided us through the beautiful grounds and outbuildings of the Quinta tasting wines and enjoying nibbles along the way. The wines were flavourful, and the nibbles carefully chosen to enhance each we tasted. Before leaving we purchased a couple of bottles to savour at home, of course!

Family Fun in Ericeira: A Coastal Adventure

While the rain may deter outdoor activities, Ericeira offers plenty of indoor fun for families. Known as a mecca for surfers, this fishing village is also home to some of the best seafood restaurants in Portugal. Indulge in fresh lobster, clams, and shrimp, or explore the local markets for a taste of authentic Portuguese cuisine.

For a unique experience, consider a private tour that includes a picturesque drive along the Atlantic coast. The Ericeira Tour offers a chance to explore the high cliffs and beaches of this charming town, with a stop at the iconic Cabo da Roca. This tour is designed with families in mind, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all ages. With convenient pick-up and drop-off services, you can relax and enjoy the journey without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads.

As the weekend draws to a close, you’ll leave Mafra with a heart full of memories and a newfound appreciation for its cultural and culinary delights. Whether you’re exploring the historic palace, savoring local wines, or enjoying a coastal adventure, Mafra offers a perfect indoor escape for a rainy weekend.
