- Valley of the Fallen - The Valley of the Fallen is a monument from the Francoist era, featuring a Catholic basilica and a grand memorial located in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. It is situated in the Cuelgamuros Valley within the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid. Franco described the monument as a “national act of atonement” and reconciliation. The construction, which took place between 1942 and 1950, primarily involved free laborers, with a smaller yet notable portion of prisoners working under a sentence redemption program.
- Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial - San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also referred to as El Escorial de Arriba, is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain. It is located to the northwest of the region on the southeastern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the base of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, 47 kilometers (29 miles) from Madrid. It serves as the head of the judicial district with the same name. The town is commonly known as El Escorial de Arriba to distinguish it from the nearby village of El Escorial, also called El Escorial de Abajo. King Felipe II commissioned the construction of this Monastery to commemorate the victory at San Quintín, which occurred on Saint Lawrence’s day in 1557. The King intended it to be a mausoleum in memory of his parents and himself, dedicated to Saint Lawrence.
