A Great First “Taste” of Madrid - Our guide Samantha emphasized that Spain is a very social culture, and tapas and wine are a central part of that socialization. So, she made forming connections within our group of 12 as integral a part of the tour as the restaurants, foods, and beverages. It soon felt less like a tour and more like an evening out with new friends. We visited four spots in central Madrid, with a different beverage and tapas at each. We began with a Spanish vermut paired with cheese and fried cod, followed by cider and Spanish tortilla, tinto verano with stuffed mushrooms and peppers, finishing with a choice wines (red, white, or sweet) or beer with garlic prawns. Samantha guided us through the different ways tapas bars can work (some standing, some sitting), and the proper sequence for making a full meal of tapas. Our route took us through Plaza Mayor, by the royal palace, and into the literary neighborhood, overviewing the history of Madrid and the formation of Spain as it is today. Samantha gave us a great “taste” of Madrid and many recommendations to further our explorations. Highly recommended tour for early in your visit to Madrid.
