A Journey Through the Andes: Cotopaxi and Quilotoa

The adventure began with an early morning departure from Quito, as we embarked on a journey southward along the Pan-American highway. The anticipation was palpable as we approached Cotopaxi National Park, home to the majestic Cotopaxi volcano, standing tall at 5,897 meters. The air was crisp, and the landscape was a breathtaking tapestry of rugged mountains and verdant valleys.

Our guide, Irene, was a beacon of knowledge and enthusiasm. Her passion for Ecuador’s natural beauty was infectious, and she effortlessly navigated us through the park’s highlights. We visited the Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Center, where we delved into the fascinating history and ecology of the Cotopaxi region. We ventured close to the waterfall, feeling the mist on our faces and the rumble of the water beneath our feet. It was a humbling reminder of the untamed beauty that Ecuador has to offer.

In the evenings, Baños offered a chance to unwind. The thermal pools provided a soothing respite, and the town’s warm hospitality made us feel at home. Our driver, Ivan, was a constant source of support, navigating the winding roads with ease and sharing his insights into the local culture.

Into the Heart of the Amazon

The final leg of our journey took us into the Amazon, a realm of unparalleled biodiversity and cultural richness. In Misahualli, we were greeted by the playful antics of monkeys, a delightful introduction to the jungle’s vibrant wildlife. The eco-lodges nestled within the forest offered a tranquil escape, allowing us to connect with nature in its purest form.

A highlight of our Amazon exploration was the chocolate tour with a local community. We harvested cacao pods, learned about the traditional methods of chocolate production, and indulged in a rich, homemade fondue. It was a sensory journey that deepened our appreciation for the region’s cultural heritage.

As our adventure drew to a close, we visited the Papallacta thermal pools, where the soothing waters provided a perfect end to our journey. Reflecting on the past four days, I was filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Ecuador’s diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures.
