It’s then time to take off and ascend into the morning sky. Away from the daytime crowds, you’ll peacefully drift over the West Bank of Luxor, taking in sights such as the monuments of Thebes. Ballooning over the West Bank of Luxor is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have, offering views of the River Nile, the ancient city of Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Queens, Temples of Ramses II, Ramses III, and Queen Hatshepsut. You’ll also enjoy seeing the beautiful mud-brick villages of the locals, providing a fantastic opportunity to capture stunning photographs of Egypt from above.
After landing, you’ll embark on a delightful half-day tour in Luxor, visiting Hatshepsut and the Valley of the Kings.
- Valley of the Kings - Then proceed to the Valley of the Kings, part of the ancient city of Thebes and the burial site for nearly all the pharaohs of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties (1539–1075 BCE), from Thutmose I to Ramses X. Located in the hills behind Dayr al-Baḥrī, the 62 known tombs, including the most intact one of the boy king Tutankhamen, showcase a variety of plans and decorations. In 1979, UNESCO designated the valley as part of the World Heritage site of ancient Thebes, which also includes Luxor, the Valley of the Queens, and Karnak.
- Enhance your visit
You can enhance your visit with the following options (at an additional cost):
-
The tomb of Tutankhamen: Marvel at the colors and paintings as you step inside its 35-century-old walls.
-
The tomb of Seti I, the father of Ramses II, one of the best-preserved tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
-
Tomb of Ramses VI, Valley of the Kings West Bank.
- Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut (built c. 1470 BCE) is one of the most impressive sights on the West Bank and differs from most other temples in Egypt. Beautifully situated at the foot of the mountain, the temple is a vision of geometric colonnades carved into a cliffside. Learn about the temple’s history and the life of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female ruler. Stroll around the courtyards and terraces, and admire the statues and hieroglyphics that adorn them.
- Colossi of Memnon - Next, visit the two great statues known as the Colossi of Memnon, which once flanked the gateway in front of the temple pylon but now stand like solitary sentinels in the middle of a field. The statues represent Amenhotep III (reigned 1390–53 BCE), but the name Memnon is of later Greek origin; with their crowns, the statues were about 70 feet (21 meters) high each. Finally, enjoy a delicious lunch at a well-known local restaurant before being transferred back to your accommodation.
