• Khor Virap - Khor Virap is renowned as a monastery and pilgrimage destination because Gregory the Illuminator was initially held captive here for approximately 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory later became the king’s spiritual advisor, and together they spearheaded the country’s conversion efforts. In 301, Armenia became the first nation in the world to officially adopt Christianity. It remains one of the most frequented pilgrimage sites in Armenia.
• Noravank Monastery - Established in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes, a former abbot of Vahanavank near today’s city of Kapan in Syunik, Noravank features a monastic complex that includes the church of S. Karapet, the S. Grigor chapel with a vaulted hall, and the church of S. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). The site also contains ruins of various civil structures and khachkars both within and outside the compound walls. Noravank served as the residence of the Orbelian princes. The architect Siranes and the miniature painter and sculptor Momik contributed to its development in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
