The first destination is the Longmen Grottoes, home to the largest and most remarkable collection of Chinese art from the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). These artworks, entirely dedicated to Buddhism, showcase the pinnacle of Chinese stone carving. The site features nearly 110,000 Buddhist stone statues, over 60 stupas, and 2,800 inscriptions carved on steles. The grottoes stretch along 1 km of the Yi River, carved into limestone formations on both banks, forming the Longmen Caves. Most carvings are on the western bank, while the eastern bank, with fewer caves, served as residences for large groups of monks.
