History of Lumbini

Lumbini Monastic Site - Situated in southwestern Nepal near the Indian border, Lumbini is part of the Indian plains and was once a significant ancient kingdom. Queen Maya Devi, heavily pregnant, was on her way to her palace when she went into early labor. By a serene pond, she gave birth to a prince destined for greatness beyond kingship; he was to bring enlightenment to the world! It was here, 2500 years ago, that Siddhartha Gautama, the future Buddha, was born.
