Fort Charlotte, situated in Lucea within the parish of Hanover, was constructed in the mid-18th century by the British to defend the north-northwest section of the island. Built during the reign of King George III of England, it is named after his consort, Charlotte. The fort included a barrack that could accommodate 50 men and featured 23 embrasures for guns, with 20 guns mounted.
During the Napoleonic Wars, it was believed that the fort’s guns were inadequate to protect the harbor. Consequently, in 1807, three 24-pounders on traversing carriages were installed on the fort’s seaward side. The fort is constructed of rectangular cut stone and has several openings facing the sea. Inside, remnants of the circular base for rotating guns remain, allowing them to fire from any angle. The Artillery Store, made of cut stone, still stands and features buttresses and a gable-ended roof.

Tryall Golf Course - The enormous Tryall water wheel, nearly 200 years old, continues to turn. This functioning cast iron water wheel, over 200 years old, is located at the majestic Tryall Club in Hanover. Although it suffered significant damage during the slave revolt of 1831, it has been restored. The Tryall Estate is situated on the main road between Hopewell and Sandy Bay, Hanover, and has been maintained as an attraction with a golf course and beach club. The history of the Tryall Club is fascinating. It is said that the over 2,000-acre property was home to the Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of Jamaica before the Spanish arrived, and possibly served as a burial ground. The property was also a sugar and slave plantation. In the 1800s, Eugene Browne purchased the Tryall property, a sugar plantation, with the apparent intention of ceasing sugar cane production. Travelers can also purchase souvenirs from locals here.
