Phillip had so much great information that I'm not sure you can get from any other tour. This tour takes you to the actual sites of the original Hollywood movie studios, record companies and broadcast stations. Great details and stories well-told by an energetic guide. What is LA if not a land of great story-telling. This is an extremely unique tour! So fun! Even teenage boys dug it.
This is an entertaining, fun and very informative historical Hollywood tour where you get to learn about the origins of the 'real' Hollywood - for anyone who loves the 'Golden Era' of movie making.
Great tour! I learned so much!
Phillip is an amazing tour guide. His research into the early years of Hollywood is meticulously thorough. Be sure, if you are interested in the history of Hollywood after 1959, this is not the tour for you. However, if you are a fan of the "Silver Screen" in its heyday, then make resevations now. Amazing history and wonderful anecdotal information. My daughter and I had a wonderful afternoon and the next time I am in LA with my husband I am going to make sure we take the tour (and I would definitely do it again). This definitely beats the walk of stars and the cement feet and hands. Thanks Phil!
Fantastic tour! Unique and informative.
Very fun tour of the history of Hollywood. Philip is friendly and a wonderful storyteller who really brings life to the buildings of old Hollywood.
We loved the tour! So well planned, thoroughly engaging, full of fascinating details — and inspiring! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and obvious love for the place and its history.
Great presentation from someone with a real feel for film history, rather than just reciting tired anecdotes and Wikipedia tidbits. I’m sure Philip must have given this tour hundreds of times, yet it had all the passion and engagement of a first time. I took the Warner Brothers Classics tour afterward and it was quite a disappointment in comparison to this tour—this tour will go on my list of recommendations for anyone visiting LA, and was a highlight of mine.
“Felix” was extraordinarily knowledgable and entertaining! And this history was something I knew very little about.
I lived in the LA area in the mid 80s-mid 90s, and never thought anything about Hollywood. It seemed a sad and touristy area that locals generally avoided. But given we were going to visit for several days, we opted to spend a couple days at the Sunset Tower Hotel and take a tour of Hollywood. But I did not want to go on one of those cheesy star tours. I wanted to actually hear a bit more about why there was this allure when all I ever saw was tourist traps and the venues I had to begrudgingly drive to, in order to see my favorite bands play in the 90s. My perspective changed by going on this tour. Philip, who is a wonderful storyteller, told us how it all started, how it became to be called Hollywood, and how talkies were born. You can feel the energy of the place after you’re done with the tour, and walk away with a totally new appreciation of this place called Hollywood. The tour was informative, educational and captivated both my spouse and me for the entire duration.
Fantastic tour! Would absolutely recommend!
Overall, the tour was very informative and fun.
Thoroughly interesting in-depth tour focusing on the live history of film, tv and king radio studios. All housed in a 1 mile radius. Awesome tour for out of town tourists, locals and all movie buffs. Highly recommended.
This was my 2nd time on the tour. I could stay for hours and hours touring.. So much information and very informative!
I have lived in Hollywood for 30 years and thought I knew a lot about the history. Philip was so knowledgeable and informative, I learned SO much! I have been rattling off facts to all my Hollywood friends! Philip also made the tour so much fun, it literally flew by! I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great, insider tour of Hollywood! You will NOT be disappointed! He is the REAL DEAL!
Not your typical “star gazing” Old Hollywood type tour but rather like walking a mile in the historical shoes of a fascinating and truely culture shaping industry with the most knowledgeable human on the planet to walk you all through it, era by era. An LA must do.
Amazing tour, would recommend to everyone to book when. Isiting LA!
Philip was an excellent, knowledgeable and kind host. Easily one of the best tours I’ve ever been on!
Phil was really knowledgeable and was a great speaker! We were thoroughly impressed and learned so much on our tour. I highly recommend it to anyone living in LA or visiting. They don't share this information on TMZ/celebrity tours!
Phil is an incredible guide. From start to finish he struck just the right tone between a business-like subject matter expert and a wise-cracking performer. He told us SO MANY amazing things about the origins of this crazy industry and all in a very surprisingly small radius. If you're in any way interested in how and where broadcasting began, what started it all off and how - this is the tour to go on. The experience of walking the street is way better than any studio tour I've been on. Not to say the studio tours (WB, Paramount) aren't good but rather this tour is especially unique - all because of the guide. He's so passionate about the subject and delivers all this sheer gold on you with such great skill - it'll be the best $40 you spend in a while. Go on your own, go on a date, go with your mum (like one guy did) or with your sister (like I did). Regrets? Yeah, one: I didn't go on this sooner.
A highly detailed and entertaining walk through old Hollywood and the places where it all began.
I really loved this tour because it gave me a really deep and detailed story of how Hollywood began. Phillip has a wonderful story that he tells from beginning to end in a effortless way. He is very considerate of finding shady areas to stop where he can tell the stories to you won't be sweating or dying of heatstroke! Without spoiling anything, I absolutely loved the summation of the tour where Phillip lists all the various places you have visited in just under two hours! I would recommend this tour to people who want to hear a real history of LA and Hollywood that is complex, but so well articulated that you will get so many details in an easy fashion.
Great tour!!! It was my second time going with friends and I loved it!
Tour was amazing. Couldn't have been happier. In addition to being a fountain of knowledge, Philip's wonderfully witty personality made for incredibly entertaining storytelling. If you have a serious interest in how and where Hollywood's entertainment business came to be you will find no better guide into that world than Philip.
Excellent information on historical facts. Though the monologue approach did not work for me. Allowing questions throughout the tour rather than the end would have made it more personalised and interactive.
Philip's knowledge of the subject matter (Hollywood history) is what really makes this tour great. His delivery is lively, informative, engrossing, and humorous. I have found that sometimes when I take a guided tour, my mind wanders a bit, but not on this one. I was fully absorbed and trying to retain all the information Philip was imparting. Also, by focusing on one particular stretch of Sunset Boulevard, he's able to really drill down into its history and provide a lot of background information that you might not necessarily get if you were just riding on a bus through the neighborhood. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who's fascinated with Hollywood history.
Felix was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of Hollywood's origins and its growth. Plus, he tells great stories of all the personalities involved!
In the space of 90 minutes Philip provided us with a wealth of facts and insights concerning the people and events which combined to make Hollywood such a fascinating and glamorous place and which gave us some of the greatest actors and films of the twentieth century and beyond. His witty and engaging style together with lots of photos and anecdotes and stopping at long-gone landmarks along a small stretch of Sunset Boulevard to explain their significance which we would have missed on our own kept us enthralled to the end. Well worth doing if you are interested in the history of Hollywood. and anecdotes kept us spellbound and
This tour was amazing! Felix took us back in time, all the way back to the beginning of what we know Hollywood to be today and told us how and where it all started. He is very knowledgeable about the history of the main film studios, music venues and people that made it all happen. If you want to escape the craziness of the Walk of Fame and get a sense of what Hollywood’s film and music history is really about, then this tour is a must!!
The Felix in Hollywood tour is highly informative, researched in depth and delivered with brio.
By far the BEST tour in L.A.! My husband and I were very excited about the Historical Hollywood tour and based on the previous reviews expected it to be great, but it was even better than great; it was AWESOME! I would highly recommend above all the Studio Tours if you are an old Hollywood lover. The studio tours, while good in their own right, only give you a slice of history, while this tour focuses on it. Philip (your tour guide) has absolutely mastered the history of Hollywood and it's more than you could imagine. He truly is a subject matter expert and a wonderful story teller. You must be in order to recreate what, in most cases, has been torn down, re-purposed and commercialized. There is so much cool history (film, TV, and radio) in that mile on Sunset that has been lost. It was an absolute joy to rediscover it all with Philip.
Best film tour I've ever been on -- learned a ton! Ordinarily, I find myself already knowing the stories/factoids that the tour guides tell -- but your tour? Holy shit! You're truly doing the lord's work, chum. Thanks for pulling the past into the present!
What an amazing tour! A half mile of Sunset changed the world, and continues to do so today. I’m still thinking about everything I learned almost a week ago.
Philip is really fun and has done his homework well. We were a group of people who all grew up in and around the neighborhood and thought we pretty much knew everything about our little corner of the universe and just expected a nice little stroll and some laughs. We were very surprised to hear information new to our ears. And presented in such an entertaining way. Bravo!!
Felix was a very informative and interesting tour guide. I learned a lot about how Hollywood evolved. Loved the tour. Highly recommend this tour who is interested in a detailed history of how it all began from someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about what happened in these few blocks of Hollywood history.
This was truly a great tour! We learned so much and felt like we got so much more than a typical tourist trap tour. Philip has a wealth of knowledge. Highly recommend!!
