We took the tour to learn about Hollywood from the beginning to today. Felix was a great Tour Guide who knows in detail how all begun. His stories were very entertaining in a Professional way. If you stay in Hollywood/LA meet Felix and book his tour.
Holger and Beate from Germany
An enthralling 2 hours providing an insight into the birth and growth of the Hollywood machine and told with passion and incredible insight. A real highlight of our stay.
Philip knew the history of this section of Sunset Boulevard, inside and out! He treated you as a research colleague, and was just as willing to receive information as he was to give it. His love for the entertainment history of the area matched, and in some cases, surpassed my own. This tour is definitely FOR the Golden Age of Hollywood fan who wants to dig deep into movie history, radio network history, and recording industry history.
Excellent tour experience — super compact tour but filled to the brim with stories that give you an amazing sense of Hollywood through the ages. Very thorough coverage of history, and both of us on the tour were entertained the entire time. Highly recommend to anyone considering taking the tour, and will be sharing with friends and family planning to visit LA, too!
If you want someone to show you the real Hollywood, you will not find a better option than the Felix in Hollywood walking tour.
When we took the tour, Philip (or Felix) Mershon warned us at the beginning that he would be aiming to convey a significant amount of information as he guided us through the history of Hollywood’s top film studios, and boy was he right. Philip is an extremely knowledgeable historian, a great speaker, and a thoroughly enjoyable person to talk to. He will also take care of you during the walking tour, so you will be in the shade for most of the nearly 2 hours the tour takes.
We will never look at Sunset Boulevard the same way after his tour, it really is incredible how such a short stretch can contain so much history. No other tour will let you into the history and secrets of old Hollywood like this, we left feeling like we had lived a little part of that exciting period of our beloved entertainment industry. We did a number of Hollywood and studio tours during our stay in LA, and no other left us as charmed as Felix in Hollywood. If you like classic films, this tour is a must.
This was an excellent tour. Phillip did a great job of communicating a lot of information in a lively and interesting way. It is clear that he is passionate about the subject matter. It was very refreshing to learn of a more authentic part of LA’s history.
Phillip had so much great information that I'm not sure you can get from any other tour. This tour takes you to the actual sites of the original Hollywood movie studios, record companies and broadcast stations. Great details and stories well-told by an energetic guide. What is LA if not a land of great story-telling. This is an extremely unique tour! So fun! Even teenage boys dug it.
This is an entertaining, fun and very informative historical Hollywood tour where you get to learn about the origins of the 'real' Hollywood - for anyone who loves the 'Golden Era' of movie making.
Great tour! I learned so much!
Phillip is an amazing tour guide. His research into the early years of Hollywood is meticulously thorough. Be sure, if you are interested in the history of Hollywood after 1959, this is not the tour for you. However, if you are a fan of the "Silver Screen" in its heyday, then make resevations now. Amazing history and wonderful anecdotal information. My daughter and I had a wonderful afternoon and the next time I am in LA with my husband I am going to make sure we take the tour (and I would definitely do it again). This definitely beats the walk of stars and the cement feet and hands. Thanks Phil!
Fantastic tour! Unique and informative.
Very fun tour of the history of Hollywood. Philip is friendly and a wonderful storyteller who really brings life to the buildings of old Hollywood.
We loved the tour! So well planned, thoroughly engaging, full of fascinating details — and inspiring!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and obvious love for the place and its history.
Great presentation from someone with a real feel for film history, rather than just reciting tired anecdotes and Wikipedia tidbits. I’m sure Philip must have given this tour hundreds of times, yet it had all the passion and engagement of a first time. I took the Warner Brothers Classics tour afterward and it was quite a disappointment in comparison to this tour—this tour will go on my list of recommendations for anyone visiting LA, and was a highlight of mine.
“Felix” was extraordinarily knowledgable and entertaining! And this history was something I knew very little about.
I lived in the LA area in the mid 80s-mid 90s, and never thought anything about Hollywood. It seemed a sad and touristy area that locals generally avoided. But given we were going to visit for several days, we opted to spend a couple days at the Sunset Tower Hotel and take a tour of Hollywood. But I did not want to go on one of those cheesy star tours. I wanted to actually hear a bit more about why there was this allure when all I ever saw was tourist traps and the venues I had to begrudgingly drive to, in order to see my favorite bands play in the 90s.
My perspective changed by going on this tour. Philip, who is a wonderful storyteller, told us how it all started, how it became to be called Hollywood, and how talkies were born. You can feel the energy of the place after you’re done with the tour, and walk away with a totally new appreciation of this place called Hollywood. The tour was informative, educational and captivated both my spouse and me for the entire duration.
Fantastic tour! Would absolutely recommend!
Overall, the tour was very informative and fun.
Thoroughly interesting in-depth tour focusing on the live history of film, tv and king radio studios. All housed in a 1 mile radius. Awesome tour for out of town tourists, locals and all movie buffs. Highly recommended.
This was my 2nd time on the tour. I could stay for hours and hours touring.. So much information and very informative!
I have lived in Hollywood for 30 years and thought I knew a lot about the history. Philip was so knowledgeable and informative, I learned SO much! I have been rattling off facts to all my Hollywood friends!
Philip also made the tour so much fun, it literally flew by!
I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great, insider tour of Hollywood! You will NOT be disappointed!
He is the REAL DEAL!
Not your typical “star gazing” Old Hollywood type tour but rather like walking a mile in the historical shoes of a fascinating and truely culture shaping industry with the most knowledgeable human on the planet to walk you all through it, era by era. An LA must do.
Amazing tour, would recommend to everyone to book when. Isiting LA!
Philip was an excellent, knowledgeable and kind host. Easily one of the best tours I’ve ever been on!
Phil was really knowledgeable and was a great speaker! We were thoroughly impressed and learned so much on our tour. I highly recommend it to anyone living in LA or visiting. They don't share this information on TMZ/celebrity tours!
Phil is an incredible guide. From start to finish he struck just the right tone between a business-like subject matter expert and a wise-cracking performer. He told us SO MANY amazing things about the origins of this crazy industry and all in a very surprisingly small radius. If you're in any way interested in how and where broadcasting began, what started it all off and how - this is the tour to go on. The experience of walking the street is way better than any studio tour I've been on. Not to say the studio tours (WB, Paramount) aren't good but rather this tour is especially unique - all because of the guide. He's so passionate about the subject and delivers all this sheer gold on you with such great skill - it'll be the best $40 you spend in a while. Go on your own, go on a date, go with your mum (like one guy did) or with your sister (like I did). Regrets? Yeah, one: I didn't go on this sooner.
A highly detailed and entertaining walk through old Hollywood and the places where it all began.
I really loved this tour because it gave me a really deep and detailed story of how Hollywood began. Phillip has a wonderful story that he tells from beginning to end in a effortless way. He is very considerate of finding shady areas to stop where he can tell the stories to you won't be sweating or dying of heatstroke!
Without spoiling anything, I absolutely loved the summation of the tour where Phillip lists all the various places you have visited in just under two hours! I would recommend this tour to people who want to hear a real history of LA and Hollywood that is complex, but so well articulated that you will get so many details in an easy fashion.
Great tour!!! It was my second time going with friends and I loved it!
Tour was amazing. Couldn't have been happier. In addition to being a fountain of knowledge, Philip's wonderfully witty personality made for incredibly entertaining storytelling. If you have a serious interest in how and where Hollywood's entertainment business came to be you will find no better guide into that world than Philip.
Excellent information on historical facts. Though the monologue approach did not work for me. Allowing questions throughout the tour rather than the end would have made it more personalised and interactive.
Philip's knowledge of the subject matter (Hollywood history) is what really makes this tour great. His delivery is lively, informative, engrossing, and humorous. I have found that sometimes when I take a guided tour, my mind wanders a bit, but not on this one. I was fully absorbed and trying to retain all the information Philip was imparting. Also, by focusing on one particular stretch of Sunset Boulevard, he's able to really drill down into its history and provide a lot of background information that you might not necessarily get if you were just riding on a bus through the neighborhood. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who's fascinated with Hollywood history.
