- London - The journey from London to Dorset takes approximately 2 hours. As you depart London, you’ll encounter some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.
- Durlston Country Park - The park’s countryside is accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset. Durlston Castle’s opening hours are from 10:30 to 16:00 daily from November to March (excluding Christmas and Boxing Day) and from 10:30 to 17:00 from April 1st to October 31st. The visitor center at Durlston Castle is a must-see, featuring exhibits like an audio-visual room, live wildlife cameras, monthly displays, and a Daily Diary of recent sightings. Although the fossil room and rooftop terrace are temporarily closed due to Covid-19 restrictions, visitors can purchase guides, maps, books, souvenirs, and refreshments. A Ranger is always available to enhance your visit. Durlston Country Park, including Durlston Castle and the Great Globe, is a worthwhile stop on the way to Corfe Castle, a site rich in history from its Saxon and Norman past.
- Corfe Castle - This thousand-year-old royal castle, shaped by warfare, is one of Britain’s most iconic remnants of the English Civil War, partially demolished in 1646 by Parliamentarians. It captivates visitors of all ages with its romantic ruins and stunning views across Purbeck. Explore 1,000 years of history as a royal palace and fortress, with tales of treachery and treason around every corner. Look for ‘murder holes’ and count the arrow loops. Experience history coming to life and observe the wildlife that inhabits the area. Opening times are as follows: Castle 10:00 - 17:00, Visitor Centre 10:00 - 16:30, Tea-room 10:00 - 17:00, Shop 10:30 - 17:30, Car Park 10:00 - 18:30. Admission prices are: Adult £10.00, Child £5.00, Family £25.00. To ensure entry, especially during busy periods like weekends and bank holidays, booking in advance is recommended.
- Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door - Passing by Lulworth Cove, a breathtaking secluded cove formed by continental collisions, it’s a prime location for geological study. A short walk along the cove leads to Durdle Door, a 200-foot-high limestone arch rising from the aquamarine waters, perfect for picnicking and relaxation.
- Chesil Bank (Chesil Beach) - From this vantage point, gaze westward over the 18-mile stretch of Chesil Beach and the southernmost tip of the Jurassic Coast. This small island boasts three castles and three lighthouses.
- Isle of Portland - Continuing west, reach Weymouth, a renowned seaside town at the River Way’s mouth, featuring Georgian and Regency architecture from 1770 to 1855. The Isle of Portland is an explorer’s paradise, filled with historical and folklore curiosities.
- Abbotsbury Abbey Remains - As the journey continues along Chesil Beach, pass the village of Abbotsbury, once home to a wealthy abbey founded in 1044. Nestled in a wooded, sheltered valley near Chesil Beach, Abbotsbury Gardens thrive in a microclimate that supports rare plant species uncommon in England.
- West Bay - Concluding the journey, visit the famous town where Broadchurch was filmed, en route to West Bay in the market town of Bridport. The golden strata of nearby East Cliff are a distinctive feature of the Jurassic Coast, popular with walkers. East Beach, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, marks the end of Chesil Beach, extending 18 miles southwest from the Isle of Portland. Due to the instability of the cliffs, it’s crucial to stay clear of the edges and bases.
